Yesterday - Independence Day- I was on the Gwagwalada segment of the Abuja - Lokoja express road and saw a convoy of trailers being escorted by Nigeria's gallant Military, on the trailer were Tanks designated UN. is this what $1 billion is being used to purchase?

argon500: Nigeria's Minister of Finance Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Tuesday day said the federal government has acquired new military equipments to confront insurgency in the North-East.

These are not Tanks. They are pre-owned tracked MT-LB(Armoured personnel carrier) been redeployed from Nigeria's UN PKO. Most likely from Liberia or darfur.

No point passing misinformation.

if not stupidity or cowardice, why call Okonjo's name? Whatever happened to Gen Aliyu Gusau?, (minister of Defence), Musiliu Obanikoro? (minister of State for Defence) and Sambo Dasuki? (National security Adviser). I suppose that in your rush to tarnish Okonjo's name, you never bothered to remember that some people and units are designated to procure and acquire weapons for Nigeria's armed forces.

The volume of Corrupt under President is very alarming. After painting these United Nations abandoned tanks, he will announce how they bought new Tanks from "China", "Russia", etc.

This is a grand plan to siphon the $1b loan.

Was it not NOI that claimed the FG bought NEW tanks? While in reality, the brought abandoned UN peace keeping tanks. The plan was after the mechanics, panel beaters and the painters are done with those scraps, we will even be thanking them for stealing the One Billion Dollars.

Re: "New" Tanks For Fighting BH Being Transported to the North? by PapiWata: 7:01pm On Oct 02, 2014
These are not tanks. They are armored personnel carriers (APCs) that have seen service as part of Nigeria's contribution to United Nations peace-keeping efforts in west Africa. These troop carriers have been sitting out in the rain for a few years, and look as though some emergency mechanical refurbishment has been used to bring them back to life.

One can only hope that the endemic scourge of counterfeit vehicle parts does not have too much of an impact on the reliability of these APCs that are hurriedly being sent to the war-front. I would hate to be seated in one of those things, boiling like a lobster without a working air condition, and then having the engine stop in the midst of a battle.

and in your warped logic a finance minister is the person in charge of policy on procurement of military hardware? The same question comes to you, what is the role of the minister of Defence, minister of State for Defence, national security Adviser, and chief of defence staff? In procurement of Armaments for Nigeria's defence forces?

I agree with you, Dr. Ngozi has no business announcing whatever was bought. But the fact is that she did. On Tuesday she was shouting NEW, NEW - while in reality it is scraps.

The truth is that under this Administration, Corruption is falling over each other - Nothing is work the way it should. Dr. NOI, should reserve her image by concentrating on her primary assignments.

Horus: Why the two letters UN on the tank? (picture)

Those are scraps from the United Nation (UN) Peace Keeping Missions. Now that Jonathan has bought them - the mechanics, wielders, panel-beaters and the spray painters can attend to it, and the Presidency can announce the purchase of brand "NEW" Tanks with the 1,000,000,000 Dollars they borrowed.

Case close. Looting Completed. grin

As for me no need to cry foul. Actually the Nigerian state has alot of military hardware rusting away in different formations. If its painting that we need to to restore it for combat service,i see no pain. If they can serve the purpose, why not. I still maintain that the war being fought is not that sophisticated that we need more than what we have to execute it successfully. Revive what we have now and kick start a gradual upgrade/overhaul of the hardware in the future years to come. As it stands we can't have everything in one day and we can't change the situation over night. We need to place particular interest in reviving what we have to execute the war as we sort for upgrades. The momentum should be sustained. QED!!!!!
