ROSSIKE:

I actually thought you were brighter than this. So you actually believe a 4,800 mw power plant can be built for $805 million? Fact is that the $805 million was an initial loan taken out to fund the Kuslie project commencement in SA, and most certainly not the entire amount required, as shown by this list of funders:

''The following institutions are involved in supporting the Kusile Power Station:

Multilateral development banks:

African Development Bank - $500 million corporate loan, November 2008

I was very shock when I saw $805million for a 4800 MW power station....

My thoughts exactly.
What we need is power transmission,at least for now.

Power transmission is not even the main thing here,
Nigeria's overall power generation is incredibly low., roughly 4000MW... for 170 million Nigeria.
I won't compare us any European, asian middle east countries.
South Africa generate close to 40,000 MW, for 50million south africans. So ours (Nigeria) is very low...

The power transmission infrastructure we ve in place in Nigeria presently coupled with some that are under construction have the capacity to accommodate more than 4000MW...

Regardless how much it cost to put the power plant in place, fact remains that SA has the largest coal fired power plant in the world and they are topping that with another largest which is almost completed.

1. The looted $20 billion that gave us nothing but darkness could have produced nothing less than 10,000 MW, but after all the looting and stealing, all we have is the same measly 2000 - 4000 MW that was there before 1999.

2. You said the FG is investing in power transmission lines and I asked you to show us the so called investment which you conveniently ignored.

3. India is building a 4000 MW plant just for $4 billion. Last time I checked, we have coal in Nigeria

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/Tata_Mundra_Ultra_Mega_Power_Project

4. Saudi Arabia is building a 4000 MW gas fired plant for just $2.85 billion. Last time I checked, we have tons of gas and we even burn it off for nothing year after year...

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/21/saudi-electricity-gas-idUSL5E7KL5HG20110921

5. $7 billion for just 4000 MW? No, something is wrong with that picture.

6. There are better and cheaper alternatives..

Btw, I still need facts about the so called investments in transmission lines..

Federal government’s bid to ensure regular power supply has received a boost as Sparkle Energy has said it planned to build a $10 billion 4000 Gas-fired Power Plant called Sparkle Power Plant, which is to become the largest gas-fired power plant in Nigeria.
Making the disclosure in a document made available to THISDAY, Groot Property Group Ltd said it floated the firm (Sparkle Energy) in partnership with some prominent Nigerian entrepreneurs and scholars based in the United States, and a Nigerian consortium for the development of the power project. The company said the project, with a construction budget of $10 billion was designed to sufficiently power up to 5 million homes in Nigeria.

Firm to Build 4000MW Power Plant

4000 MW gas fired power plant for $10 billion? And Saudi Arabia building the same 4000 MW gas fired plant for $2.5 billion?

$7 billion for 4000 MW Dam power project in Nigeria while a $2.5 billion gas fired power plant in Saudi Arabia generates the same 4000 MW?

Why not get Siemens to build the same thing they are building in Saudi Arabia X 3 @ 10000-12000 MW for the same amount we are paying for the 4000 MW Dam project?

I'm I missing something here?

businesslawyer: This same project whose Contract was ratified in 2011 by this same Government promising 87monts completion period at around $2billion suddenly is getting re awarded just to make political statement-http://www.dailytimes.com.ng/article/fec-ratifies-mambilla-hydro-power-project.

We have a lying deceptive government.
THIS WAS IN 2011
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday ratified an earlier awarded contract of N5.65billion (US$37.2million) for the proposed 2,600-Megawatt Mambilla Hydro power project in Taraba.

Minister of Information and Communications Labaran Maku told reporters after the FEC meeting which was presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House in Abuja.

Labaran said the contract was awarded to Messrs Coyne et Bellier together with two local companies with an 87 months completion period.

Clarifying an earlier FEC directive stopping the award of all contracts since December 2010, Labaran said the Mambilla power project had been awarded previously, but there was the need for its ratification by the Council.

"It is a crown project for this country in addressing significantly the issue of power," he said, stressing that the project was one of the major programmes of the Federal Government towards improving energy security in the country.

The FEC also ratified approval for the variation of the contracts for the construction of 225MW Gbarain Power Plant and 338MW Egbema Power Plant. The ratification of the variation was as a result of memos presented by the Minister of State for Power, Nuhu Wyato.

The government had made a request made to the contractors to modify the design of the plant to accommodate additional gas turbines and combined cycle operation.

Gbarain contract was reviewed from N21billion to N33.5billion while Egbema contract was reviewed to raise expected generation from 338MW to 675MW.

Crowd management

In another development, the President has directed special training of security agencies on crowd management to avoid future occurrence of the last week’s tragedy in Port Harcourt.

Labaran said the President gave the directive after the Council had reviewed the incidence.

He stated that FEC commiserated with the families of the victims of the tragedy and prayed God for the repose of their souls.
Why can't Naija journalists challenge them facts like these It was 2600MW in 2011, now it's 3000MW with inflated figure.

Was the agric reform, the automobile policy, freedom of information bill, the railway revival, the road constructions, ajaokuta steel that is gradually coming to life, the growth in manufacturing, growth in economy, the privatization of the power sector etc all because of election?
Goodluck so far has proven to be a politician who does what he says, when it comes to infrastructure I can take this government promises to the bank.

God bless you. The fact is you can take the FG serious because they have a record of performance that is matched to their earlier promises.

Re: FG To Sign $7 Billion Contract For Mambila Power Plant This Month!! by arresa: 8:13pm On Oct 03, 2014
With the FG still holding on to power transmission, the privatization scheme remains meaningless and it's still the main stumbling block and the reason why we can not get adequate investments in the power sector. Investors are not stupid because they know with our population and size of economy, Nigeria is a good market for power generation and transmission, but they are not foolish because only dumb and foolish people invests millions and billions to, generate power then turn around and hand it over to another entity to transmit via a very obsolete transmission grid that loses a major chunk of generated power?

They need to privatize the whole sector from top to bottom including transmission..

Are there no engineers on Nairaland to educate ignorant folks here that hydro power plants cost much more than fossil fuel power plants because dams are massive civil engineering undertakings. However hydro power plants remain very attractive because the raw material (water) is completely free and these plants have by far the longest useful life span of any type of power plant (up to 100 years vs 30 years for the very best steam turbine power stations and 20 years for gas turbines.)

GEJ basically doubled the capacity of all the gas power stations started by OBJ and completed by GEJ such as Omotosho, Geregu etc by turning them into highly efficient combined cycle (gas and steam) power stations.

For the folks that are talking about power transmission projects, dozens are ongoing both in NIPP and TCN. Many are awarded every year and smart local and foreign contractors are hard at work building these substations and transmission lines and smiling to the bank while some folks are here on Nairaland talking ignorantly.

It is painful that many of these projects have been delayed almost endlessly by outrageous compensation demands by indigenous groups who keep on planting cashew crops the moment they hear that the government wants to build transmission lines or substations in their towns and villages even in virgin forests. They then turn round to demand N5k for each crop that is hardly 6 inches tall under the guise of economic trees.

Yes corruption is a big problem in our dear country and it must be fought much more decisively. Unfortunately the opposition is even more corrupt than the ruling party. If not, why do we have somebody affectionately called Thie^f^nubu. And what happened to the dollars Farouk stuffed into his cap. What did our Speaker do about it. And this is the guy that wants to be our president.

The opposition have every right to try to get into Aso Rock but it should not be done through bloodshed, intimidation, blatant lies, white lies, abuse and silly students as e-warriors.

Enough of my long speech. Lucky Dube sang:

If you stand for the truth, then you will always stand alone
For these that stand for the truth stand alone!

Last bullet: Easterners say the truth, Westerners manage the truth.
Ponder on it.

Naija will be great. ... sooner than later.

Low Water Levels at Hydro Stations to Worsen Power Supply

Hydro power dams are not dependable and consistent since they get plagued by power water level which decreases their efficiency..

This year alone, we are likely to lose 1,000 megawatts due to low water level at Kainji, Jeba and shiroro..

Cheaper gas fired plants are more dependable and we have more than enough gas to power tons of them.

We have so much gas that we burn it off for nothing. Why not build gas fired plants and make good use of the gas we've been wasting for decades..

No, you are wrong and sentimental. Privatising the transmission sector is extremely difficult because the revenues from wheeling charges (paid to the transmission company for the transporting the electricity from the generating stations to the distribution companies) simply cannot cover the huge costs of building, maintaining and operating transmission lines and substations. Even problems from restive communities where these lines pass through is enough to put any investor that will be crazy enough to want to stake his money.

Also since the transmission infrastructure is a monolithic network, privatizing it will simply create a natural monopoly. Imagine what would have happened if Adenuga or Dangote owned the entire mobile telephone network in this country.

For all of you shouting 'privatize privatize' don't start crying when the inflated bills start coming or the assets are sold to the rich and mighty or even political cronies.

Nigeria - Electric power transmission and distribution losses
Electric power transmission and distribution losses (kWh)

The value for Electric power transmission and distribution losses (kWh) in Nigeria was 4,497,000,000 as of 2010. As the graph below shows, over the past 39 years this indicator reached a maximum value of 8,085,000,000 in 2002 and a minimum value of 250,000,000 in 1971.

Definition: Electric power transmission and distribution losses include losses in transmission between sources of supply and points of distribution and in the distribution to consumers, including pilferage.

I don't think you are an engineer. If you are not, then consult your friends who are engineers on the merits of building hydro power plants. Do not rely on newspaper articles on an issue such as this. Very few journalists are engineers and remember newspapers publish articles primarily to sell as many copies as possible or they have political sponsors who tele-guide them.

Now back to the topic. Hydro power plants are called base load power plants and are used to stabilise the power system because they are very heavy by nature, slow to run up and difficult to slow down. In every power grid, there is always a mix of different types of power plants because each type has its advantages and disadvantages. For example you can shut down an entire gas or steam power plant by simply shutting off the gas pipeline. It happened recently when petroleum sector workers went on strike. During that strike, only the hydro power plants were supplying power to our great country.

Power is too important to the development of this country that both PDP and APC must desist from politicizing it. If this present administration starts a hydro power project that had been on the drawing board for donkey years, we must give thumbs up to it and insist that whoever is in Aso Rock in 2015 onwards must complete it. By the way that was exactly what GEJ did for power projects started by OBJ. He went ahead and completed them, then expanded them before starting new ones. He could have abandoned them and started his own.

Cheers
