Why Peter Obi Left APGA And Joined PDP? by ImanuelJannah(m): 10:26am On Oct 10, 2014

Peter Obi and the PDP leaders that visited him to persuade him to join the PDP

Peter Obi declared for the PDP a few days in Onitsha, Anambra state to the dismay and disappointment of Anambra people although many superficially claim they had expected it.

Obi formally declared to join the PDP amidst pomp, ceremony and min fanfare on the 8th of October, 2014. The declaration was done in his Onitsha GRA residence, and it was done in the presence of the media, and numerous PDP leaders from the South-East, including the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekwerumadu; Deputy Speaker, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha; SGF, Sen. Pius Anyim Pius and the Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, others in the entourage includes, the Governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Dr. Godswill Akpabio, Governor Elechi(rep) ;former Governor, Okwesilieze Nwodo, former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, Sen. Uche Chukwumerije, Emma Anosike, Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Sen. Ben Obi, Sen. Igwe Paulinus, Kema Chikwe, Others are Hons. Ozongbachi, Offor Chukwuegbo, Uche Ekwunife, Chris Azobogu, Fort Dike, Jerry Alagboso, Toby Okechukwu, Kingsley Ebenyi, Onyechi Ezenwa, Ibechie, Eucharia Anazodo, Chuma Nzeribe, Princess Adaeze Oduah, Arua Arunsi, Egwuatu Cyril, Anayo Nebe, Col Usobundu, Ifeanyi Ubah. Members of the Federal EXCO were there: Emeka Nwogu, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, Osita Chidoka, Valarie Onwualili, among many others.

I have stated this facts and set the records straight due to the fact that some people still have the guts to deny the reality that Peter Obi has left APGA for good.

They ought to have done their homework before speaking out. Peter Obi had not only left APGA, but also gave a clue as to why he dumped the party under which Anambrarians were mobilized and persuaded to support him when he desired to govern the state. Obi’s reason, according to his statement on the day of defection to PDP, for joining the PDP is not about the crisis in APGA, but because of his personal desire to compete and not spectate in national affairs. SIMPLY PUT, the ex-governor wants to assume a POLITICAL OFFICE at the federal level.

If you have been keeping tabs on the PDP and its activities since 1999, you will have noticed that a recurring pattern for ex-governors or senators from a minority party to assume ministerial, ambassadorial or other juicy political positions in the federal government, if they can jettison the sacrifices and pains the masses went through for them while they were members of the minority and join the PDP, is already playing itself out in Peter Obi’s case.

One of the most recent instances is the appointment of Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau as Minister of Education. Shekarau like Obi had also served as governor of his state – Kano for eight years under a minority party. However, Shekarau became a federal minister shortly after he left the APC for the PDP. It’s clear to discerning Anambrarians that a similar scenario is about to play out for Obi except some serious unforeseen contingencies arise as the days go by.

Let us recall the words of the coordinating minister of the economy and minister of finance – Prof. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala during an auspicious public event held in March, 2014 at Onitsha to mark the end of Obi’s 8-year stewardship as governor of Anambra, the minister had publicly said: “Margaret shouldn’t prepare Peter a long holiday after he leaves office as governor, because Mr. President has prepared something special for him at the federal level.” So Obi’s defection to PDP can be said to had been rightly anticipated by discerning Anambrarians.

Peter Obi is a young and vibrant philosopher yet pragmatic, business-minded and ambitious. He had reasoned that remaining in a party in which the national chairman appears distracted by a personal desire to become a senator in 2015 instead of been focused on channel party resources for the national advancement, spread and success of the party in other states of the federation will deal heavy jabs to his hope of assuming a prominent political office at the federal level and perhaps murder it. obi had to defect before the distractions in APGA makes a lot of his personal agenda too difficult to be accomplished.

Obi’s decision to move to the PDP isn’t the result of the flattery, the unimaginably flowery words, and the propaganda that was uttered by the PDP leaders that “persuaded” him to join the fold, it was about the agreement between Aso Rock and Peter Obi.

While Obi still maintains that the key leaders in APGA remain his personal friends, and that this will continue so long as they wishe to maintain that friendship, his defection to the PDP is seen by most Anambrarians as a disappointment, betrayal of trust, and abuse of the people’s intelligence for personal gain.

Peter Obi may have had genuine personal reasons for the defection, but he should know that the masses that stood by him through the thick and thin of his days as Anambra governor may no longer trust him as they used to do, because a majority of them no longer see hima s different from the PDP “rogues” that wrecked havoc in the state in times past.

Ojukwu must be weeping in his grave.
He just succeeded in making a mess of all what ojukwu did to ensure the emergence of a governor from apga (party ndi igbo).

Next it will be governor Obiano defecting as well. Apga is as good as dead already

Obi's defection makes me wonder if Igbos will ever have one political voice after Ojukwu
