The salary structures differ according to certain laid down rules.Saying your mind sometimes can be time bomb to discredit you.The only thing to say at the point is to throw the question back to them or simply make proper investigation about the organisation pay before hand' |

Why on earth should company be asking such a ridiculous question at the first instance? To the best of my knowledge , those that ask such question are small firm. 1 Like |

Godditex:What if the pay was lower than N90,000 or N100,000. The best way to answer it is by telling the company to pay them based on their salary structure. A good company has good salary structure. 1 Like |

All the interviewer wants to know is ur worth and carriage, If u don't no the. Salary structure of the position u are applying for, u are obviously not prepared. Pass the interview with flying colours. And ask for a figure better than the rest. Fail the interview and ask them to pay u anything.. that u want to learn on the Job. 1 Like 3 Shares |

Truth be told Like seriously;if you didn't make an inquiry/research on what the company pays it employees for a start, you likely to lose the job as well. If you state a poor wage, that is no where around the take home package, you are doomed.... It definitely would alert the employer that you are just a hungry man with a lot of hardship & you ain't capable to deliver at work. You request for an outrageous package, all you get in reply is "we would get back/in touch with you"...it sends a wrong signal, indicating that you greedy(unless you are an expatriate) thinking of your pocket. |

Speaking strictly from experience, this is what professionals call a trick question. The employer wants to see your level of thinking and awareness. The best way to answer the question is to reinforce your answer with what you bring to the table. For example: According to prevailing job market rates, an entry level engineer makes 100 to 150,000 naira per month, I would like to be paid Bleep,Bleep amount due to the fact that I have several years of experience in this field and can confidently carry out my job functions. or a better answer While pay is certainly a factor in accepting a job offer, I value other benefits associated with working with such a prestigious company. I would like to be paid Bleep,Bleep naira as I feel it would be a reasonable compensation for my services. The key here is to be confident and smile, don't appear to be needy or nervous! 5 Likes 1 Share |

I was at an oil and gas coy yesterday and after so many questions, the interviewer asked the dreaded question "How much do you want to be paid?" within me I was going to say it depends on the company salary structure but I guess that would be very dumb so I just picked my regular range 1.2m/annum. thinking that I've settled that then she said do you mean gross? then I was lost completely. The mistake I made was really simply and avoidable. I just should have said 1.2m/annum after income and pension tax deduction. 1 Like |

Kentnickole: Godditex: If the pay structure isn't available after your research, then grade yourself depending on what you have to offer and, most importantly, the scale of the company and its location. For a position that didn't require years of experience; mostly entry level, 80k - 100k comes to mind. I mentioned location because from my little experience working in Lagos, accommodation and transportation is more demanding. Someone earning 60k at Umuahia will have a better savings and better quality of life than someone earning 80k at Lagos. For a position that required you to have 1 or 2 certification and expertise, this is where it becomes tricky. They are hiring you because you had a masters (which costs nothing less than 300k to acquire), or because you have a NEBOSH certification in safety, or a certified QMS officer, Plant designer, Chartered Accountant, Programmer or you have up to 5 years of working experience; then place yourself in an assist managerial level and demand 180k - 250k for the start. I don't support the idea of asking a HR to pay you according to their scale. There's a reason the question was thrown at you; don't throw it back to them! And, I keep saying this, what if their salary scale is 40k per month? 7 Likes 1 Share |
