We’ll Work For All Tribes Living In Lagos – Ambode by rocgirl: 5:29am On Nov 01, 2014 |
Akinwumi Ambode, arguably the most prominent of members of the All People’s Congress (APC) who aspire to be governor in Lagos next year formally declared his interest in the race Friday, October 24. The event which took place at the Onikan Stadium in the heart of Lagos was witnessed by an estimated 30,000 crowd of party faithful, who started congregating as early as 6 am on the said day. The enthusiastic crowd waited patiently for the arrival of the man of the moment. And as they waited, popular Fuji artiste, Wasiu Alabi popularly known as Pasuma Wonder and Sensational rap artistes, M.I and Olamide kept the massive audience happy and dancing to one popular song after another. But when Ambode drove in, in the company of a number of close associates, not even the thrill of the tunes from these superstars could restrain the frenzy with which he was received. Not to deny his supporters the urge to have a feel of their candidate, Ambode, sporting a white three piece white native attire and a blue cap moved around the stadium waving two brooms with either hands, to the ecstatic crowd. On mounting the podium to speak, the aspirant thanked the enthusiastic crowd for the support which they have given him since he started consultations one year ago saying that the gathering of the day was the result of these year- long discussions,. Ambode, in his speech titled: “Continuing the Progress, Securing the Future” noted further that Lagos State has witnessed huge development in the past 15 years and that it was important to ensure that the tide of development continues without interruption. He promised that he was the most competent candidate for the job. “The last fifteen years have witnessed an irreversible growth and development of our great state with a foundation laid concretely by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu between 1999 and 2007. The consolidation of that growth, of which we are all living testimonies, have been achieved by the indefatigable incumbent Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola. (SAN) “I stand before you today in the spirit of the continuity of excellence that Lagos is known for. My mission is to create a clean, secure and prosperous Lagos State that is driven by a vibrant economy and supported by quality service, equity and justice,” Ambode said Identifying that Lagos remains the most cosmopolitan state in the country, the Epe born aspirant promised that an administration led by him would make Lagos more livable and provide equal opportunities for everyone one irrespective of origin, gender or religion. According to him: “Whether you are Igbo, Efik, Ijaw, Hausa, Fulani, a foreigner, whoever you are, so far you live or work in Lagos, our government will work for you and you will be adequately represented. “We want a Lagos that will protect Abdullahi; that will address the issues of Chukwuma and uphold the well-being of Yewande. We want a Lagos that will not deny any Nigerian citizen the right of political participation and access to services. It is not about sectionalism. This is the new Nigeria that we want to build and Lagos is the focal point from where we would build the Nigeria of our dreams.” Although the multitude of supporters at the declaration hailed every sentence that Ambode made in the course of his speech, a party stalwart who requested not to be named told us that the most impressive part of the declaration “is that it brought massive flame to APC in the South West. This is the first rally that the party would hold in Lagos since its formation and so this was not just about Ambode’s declaration but a veritable signal to the opposition party in the south west that the APC is never short of quality offerings. This is a point that Ambode himself may have unwittingly endorsed when he said as follows in his speech: “Every family is represented in Lagos and have benefited from the purposeful APC government. If you believe Lagos can do more, it is imperative that we do not only win in Lagos but we must also take over the centre at Abuja. So when we say change, we mean change in its total ramifications. Change at the Centre. We want to have more. We deserve more…” A call which his party members hopw that Nigerians would yield.
