Nigeria Has Fifth Strongest Army In Africa by james669: 7:05am On Nov 06, 2014 |
The Global Fire Power ranking (GFP) measures countries’ military strength and gives a power index number in order to compare them to other countries. Below are the countries with the most powerful militaries in Africa. 1. Egypt Egyptian military is the strongest among other countries in Africa due to the sheer size of its armed forces. Egyptian soldiers are well equipped and well trained, but are inferior to Israeli soldiers in terms of weaponry and training. More than 1.5 million individuals reach the army age every year. It has more than 800 military aircraft and 200 helicopters. 2. Algeria Algerian military is made up of a modern army, navy and air force. Frontline personnel number more than 120,000 active personnel, which is well equipped and it has nearly 2,000 armoured fighting vehicles at its disposal. Algeria also has the added benefit of its own oil reserves, allowing it to use its own fuel to power tanks, aircraft carriers, naval vessels, and more. Algeria continues to be among the African countries with the best military power. 3. Ethiopia Ethiopia has the third strongest military on the African continent as a result of both their large population and their long independence from colonisation. As a landlocked country, it has focused its resources on building its army and air force to an impressive degree. With a population of 38 million people, 24 million of the citizens are considered to be fit for active service. Ethiopia reportedly had around 182,500 personnel in their ground forces and a further 3,000 air force personnel. 4. South Africa The country has got what it takes to be among the top countries in Africa, strong enough to be recognised. South Africa uses its very advanced army for pacification and international cooperation. Its aircraft and naval vessels are especially well equipped with the latest technology, and though the country has less than 88,000 active front-line personnel and 17,000 active reserve personnel, it has the capabilities and manpower for much more. 5. Nigeria Nigeria has the second largest army by number of troops on the continent, but due to political instability and lack of equipment, it has been ranked just the fifth strongest country in Africa. The country has more than 1,400 armoured vehicles, 360 tanks, and 6,000 logistical vehicles at its disposal, as well as nearly 300 aircraft and 25 high-powered naval vessels. The army has been criticised for their heavy-handed manner in dealing with civilians during anti-Boko Haram operations in the North-east. The previous year, Nigeria occupied the 4th place. such a disgraceful bunch! hahahaha I need to send our boys scout to rescue these loud-mouthed modafakas Boko Haram Insurgency Forces Nigerian Soldiers To Flee To Cameroun About 300 Nigerian soldiers have reportedly fled to Cameroon after Boko Haram insurgents overran Mubi, the second largest city in Borno State from security forces on Wednesday.Military sources from neighbouring Cameroon, disclosed that Nigerian soldiers fled the north-eastern part of Nigeria, where the insurgency launched by the sect was fierce, and crossed the Nigeria-Cameroon border. The sources also revealed that more Nigerian troops might have fled to other border towns in Cameroon after the Mubi attack, while adding however, that their number had yet to be ascertained. The deserting Nigerian soldiers, according to a reports, would be moved away from the border areas to more secure locations, where they would be disarmed, fed and eventually repatriated to Nigeria. The insurgents had taken over Mararaba Hildi, some few kilometres to Mubi town, on Tuesday, prompting a mass exodus of residents. Hundreds of soldiers were said to have fled Mubi, which hosts two universities, as insurgents made advances to take over the town on Wednesday. A senior Cameroonian military officer involved in the provision of welfare materials to the deserters, said, “They (Nigerian soldiers) are mostly around Boucla village in Bourha sub-division. “So far, we can estimate the number of arrivals to be at about 300. These are the ones who arrived in uniform but we know that there are several others who shed their uniforms for civilian attires”. The Mubi rout also forced thousands of Nigerian civilians to hit border villages in Cameroon in Benoue and Mayo Louti Divisions, and around Gachiga town. It was, however, learnt that Cameroonian government was worried about the increasing number of refugees and where to keep them. The relocation of Nigerian refugees was said to have become necessary as insurgents had previously attacked locations where fleeing Nigerian soldiers were housed. Protests by indigenes of the border towns over attacks on the camps were said to have forced the Cameroonian government to adopt a policy of moving deserters far away from the border and out of the reach of Boko Haram. It was further learnt that Cameroon had begun screening of deserters and refugees to prevent infiltration by insurgents. “This time around, we are conducting a more thorough screening to avoid letting in Boko Haram infiltrators, who are known to inhabit the ranks of the Nigerian military,” an official of the Cameroonian government had offered in confidence. Another Cameroonian military officer, who insisted on anonymity, expressed fears over possible infiltration of the country’s system through the refugee camps. He declined to give further details on how the screening was being conducted. “Taking them in is not something to make noise about. You and I know that we are in a military situation here. This is a war zone with Boko Haram spies crawling all over the place. “The number we take and where we take them are obviously a military intelligence affair and nobody can give you that information, even if you were to approach the authorities in Yaounde,” the top source disclosed. In a related development, it was gathered that Boko Haram had been cultivating and recruiting local fighters among Cameroonian youths. The sect is operating cells that have been in operation in Cameroon for over three years, recruiting through what a source described as “financial enticement and intimidation.” Community leaders in the Far North region say thousands of Cameroonian youths had joined the ranks of Boko Haram since the beginning of the year. “These are mostly young unemployed Cameroonians lured by handsome financial proposals by Boko Haram point men. Other Boko Haram sleeper cells are run by senior Islamists intimidated into doing the bidding of the sect,” one of the traditional leaders in the area, who refused to have his name in print explained.
