A former Commissioner for Physical Planning, Mr. Hakeem Gbajabiamila, has accused the Lagos State Government of straying from the original mega-city plan.

Gbajabiamila, who was commissioner during the administration of former Governor Bola Tinubu, said the mega-city project being embarked on by the Governor Babatunde Fashola administration was not impressive.

The former commissioner, who is a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, said this during an interview with our correspondent while announcing his intention to contest the Lagos-Central senatorial election.

He explained that according to the original plan of the project, the Federal Government was supposed to provide 55 per cent of the funds while Lagos and Ogun states would provide 25 and 20 per cent respectively.

He said the state government had incurred serious debts because instead of joining hands with the Federal Government to actualise the project, it was shouldering the entire responsibility for political reasons.

He said, “During the second term of Tinubu, we reviewed the regional plan and we saw all the issues that needed to be addressed. At that point in time also, there was a strategic move to redistribute the development around the state which led to the megacity development plan.

“Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was very interested in seeing that Lagos was given a fair consideration because we were pushing for a special status for Lagos. So we wanted a development plan that encompasses all of this so the Lagos megacity project which I was part of the presidential task force came up with a plan that we should set up a Lagos Mega City development Authority which would be enacted by law and which would give the President an opportunity every year to provide a budget for it just like they were doing for the Niger Delta Development Commission.

“And that entire plan was in place, the Federal Government would have 55 per cent interest in that, Lagos would have 25 per cent and 20 per cent for Ogun State.”

Gbajabaimila said the megacity project was not as beautiful as it ought to be as the state government had not been able to provide world-class transport

“A mega-city is meant to have a mass transit facility. There is supposed to be a triangular corridor that was designed and should be from Ifo to Iddo to Okokomaiko and back to Ifo. That triangle should have been in place but that has not happened till now. We are grappling with trying to look for taxes to be able to fund such projects,” he said.
