good evening sir, i need ur advice on this; ok medicine had always been my dream course buh due to some factors like that, I ended studying biochemistry even fell in love with it. I'm in my finals now currently writing my project, then my dad comes up with this idea that i should go for a second degree in medicine ofcourse he knows someone who would help and he's ready to sponsor, buh I'm thinking it's better i go for my masters... I really dont know which is better, can u help? *modified * i also need y'alls view on this thanks in advance... |

Jarus:I know him very well as he was a friend. He and his closest pal, same class in ife both got jobs in chevron before toyin even went for his Msc in reservoir evaluation at HWU on his study leave. The close pal graduated with 2.1 and still works for chevron till date. Those are just two out of many. I have lost count of Ife physics graduates working in Mobil unlimited, total exploration, chevron, Schlumberger e.t.c with first degree, no masters. There are lots of them in telcos too. Most of the ones abroad are also working for different engineering firms. |

rioemmanuel:Go for elect. It's more specialized. With a degree in elect, you can get your IT certifications and you are good to go. |

FrancisTony:All engineers attended university, except you are referring to Technologist, technicians and trades people. In fact petroleum engineering is one of the least specialized courses in Engineering. e.g a geologist, physicist or civil engineer can work as a petroleum engineer but surely not the other way round. Jerry24kay:Yes, that's why we have polytechnics and school of technical education. But everyone wants to go to Uni cos their parents wants them to attend one instead of following their passion. Fkhalifa:Well, that's one of the highest employers of labour in Nigeria. Engineers do not enjoy working in banks or other non engineering roles but there aren't much choices in Nigeria. |

Re: Does Undergraduate Course Of Study Really Matter? by Nobody: 8:06pm On Nov 07, 2014 |
Jarus:Exactly bro. The most important thing is to finish well. Most of the guys with physics degree have 1st class and 2.1. Just a few with 2.2 made it into the o&g industry. 2 Likes |

Jarus:True. If one visits the Geology and applied geophysics dept of OAU. One's jaw would drop. Their alumni are doing wonders in terms of funding that department. |

@Jarus,Xfire,Saxywale,Iamtheprincipal...After my Bsc.Physics which 1 is advisable to go for?: 1. Direct Msc. in Applied geophysics 2. PGD Elect/Elect engineering then Msc. Elect/Elect engineering anticipating your responses sir(s) |

Could remember the time my friends and I used to laugh @ people studying sociology. We were into engineering courses. Most of them are now through, based on the fact it was a 4-year course and ours was 5. And besides, most of my friends now have extras. Little did we know then that sociology was a little bit stressful unlike engineering. Had I known I opted for a social science course |

Jamzig1:To be honest, that is hard to say because Physics is very broad. You don't need a PGDIP in elect/electronics. You would be offered straight admission to the Msc if you graduate with atleast a 2.2. You might even develop other interest apart from those two listed. e.g One of friend(a physics graduate) is a chartered account working with one of the big firms. One of my Oga back at Uni infact gained employment after graduation as a business analyst with (One of the Big 4), after 2 years, he moved to telco(one of the 4 in Nigeria). Now he works with Mobil unlimited as an exploration geophysicist. I called him Oga because I haven't in my life met someone as brilliant has that guy. He is a genius. Another Physics graduate I know is working as a medical Physicist in one of the FMC's. I have another senior working as an instrumentation engineer in one of the Subsea engineering coy. One of my Junior is working as a welding Engineer/NDT in one of the biggest fabrication firms for the Oil and Gas industry. I don't want to mention the companies on here as the guy is on Nairaland. Another is working as a Materials and metallurgical engineering in one of the in the UK. Yours truly worked as a Credit Analyst(UK and Nigeria), Transportation Engineer(UK). Now I am trying to get into the quality Engineering/welding/NDT sector here in Canada. That is how flexible a physics degree is. The career option you have with a physics degree is numerous, that is why they call Physics, the ''Bedrock of Engineering''. I move with the need of whichever country I find myself. Now my background in Physics is what made me so flexible. What I can advise is that get in first, by the time you get to your 3rd or 4th year, then you can start thinking of specializing. But remember to finish strong. It would give you a better chance in the competitive job market. My 2 cents. 4 Likes |

^^^^ Wow! i am very impressed with what i am seeing. Knowing what people that passed through the field are achieving/have achieved gives me inspiration to do more. Thanks a lot for the insight...by the way are u sure i don't need a pgdip b4 msc.elect/elect cos most universites requirements i have checked said d opposite..Thanks again |
