Hw My Mechanic Said I Shld B Checking My ATF Level by ogawisdom(m): 7:24pm On Nov 13, 2014
Hi folks sup, so I noticed my atf was leaking as I ws driving out yesterday so I topped it and managed it dt way yesterday bc d leak ws very minimal. Today I went to see my mech to trace d leak and it ws d gear box oil seal which he losed and replaced. To my surprise wen he ws replacin it atf did nt gosh out wen he removed d old seal n he shouted oga ATF no dey ur auto gear n dt would ve killed d auto gear if u waited further. Meanwhile this ws something I jst topped yesterday n checked its level.

After everything I showed him hw I usually check my atf level; when d engine is hot n I will park on a level ground n check d hot max level on dip stick. D mech said dt I can't get accurate check lik dt but by leavin d car runnin with d gear in D while holdin d brake n someone can nw check d level. He used his method n added abt 2litres of ATF oil to guage my atf level.

Using my method d fluid is well above d dip stick hot max level but he told me everytin is ok.

So guys hw do u check ur ATF level n what do u think abt my method n dt of my mechanic. Any danger in having too much ATF in ur transmission

Op, the way to check your ATF is written in your owner's manual. Use that method. I suspect though that your method will be closer than that of your mech. You didn't specify the car you are talking about. Too much ATF is not good for your gearbox. It can damage it. Hope your mech used the right ATF?

Haba does ur handbrake stop ur car frm rollin wen d car is runnin n engaged in D. Mine doesn't ooo lipsrsealed my car ll roll esp if it is on a non level surface. So one needs two hands to get d job done ie d brake must b held.

Your mechanics way is not far off but will give you a little excess. The difference is that the car should be turned off to before check.

This is for Honda accord.

I just don't know how these clowns always think they know a car better than its manufacturer.

Op, if you are in doubt, pls consult your vehicle manual.

Your last paragraph is the best advice for him. Different cars have different ways to check their ATF. I was going through an owner's manual sometimes ago, the instructions are:

Drive the car around for like 10 minutes; to achieve getting the ATF heated up to 80 degrees.

Park on a level ground

Move the lever through the PRNDL, starting from L, ending in P, let it stay at each point for at least 3 seconds.

With the engine still running, and the lever in PARK, pull the dipstick and check.

Car is 01 Nissan Primera with a CVT transmission.

But seriously, talking about safety, i do not believe any manufacturer will advise you to put the gear in D and hold d vehicle with a hand break while checking the tranny level.

To check tranny fluid level, most manufacturers advise the following

1. Drive the vehicle to its optimum temperature
2. Pack the vehicle on a level ground
3. Select the gear through all positions and return to P
4. Check the tranny fluid level using the hot marks on its dipstick

Your mechanic method is not recommended due to safety reason and the fact that you will end up over fill your trannny.

I ve a feeling my mech may ve overfilled my tranny but I allowed him bc wen he removed my geal box oil seal oil did nt gosh out which seems abnormal n a sign my tranny is lacking oil n this was d same tranny I guaged a day b4.

All these check ur manual dt u all recommend is good but dt works only for cars dt most things r at factory setting n nt for cars over 15yrs with lots of adjustments in settings.

To check your automatic transmission fluid, follow these steps:

Pull out the dipstick.

With the gearshift in Neutral or Park and the parking brake on, let your engine run. Be sure the engine is warm when you pull out the dipstick. (Don’t turn off the engine.)

Check the fluid.

Dip the tip of your index finger into the fluid on the dipstick and rub the fluid between your finger and the tip of your thumb. The transmission fluid on the dipstick should be pinkish and almost clear. If it looks or smells burnt or has particles in it, have a mechanic drain and change the fluid.

Wipe the dipstick with a clean, lint-free rag; then reinsert it and pull it out again.

If the transmission fluid is clear but doesn’t reach the “Full” line on the dipstick, use a funnel to pour just enough transmission fluid down the dipstick tube to reach the line. Don’t overfill!

There are several types of transmission fluid. Each is made for a specific type of automatic transmission. Newer transmissions from the major automakers require different fluid than older ones. Because so many different kinds of transmissions are around these days, check your owner’s manual or dealership to find out which type of fluid your vehicle requires.

A faulty transmission and one that’s just low on fluid share many of the same symptoms! If your vehicle hesitates when your automatic transmission shifts gears, check the transmission fluid level before you let any mechanic start talking about servicing or adjusting your transmission or selling you a new one. Obviously, adding transmission fluid is a lot cheaper than replacing the whole transmission system!
