hardbody: Sir you are operating with old information. Due to several factors mostly due to finance and man know man employment is not automatic for first class graduate and I doubt if any institution in Nigeria allows first class students to offer Ph.d straight. If you insist otherwise please support your claim. |

gunners160:You would be given your offer letter after graduation. After completing your NYSC then you can resume and start work. For graduates without first class but with a strong CGPA can also work as graduate assistant but its not automatic employment. You would have to apply through the registrar but the possibility of getting a GA position in a fed uni is very slim. however, chances of getting a GA position without firstclass but with a cgpa of 4 points and above in private uni is high. New universities do advertise for GA position and the minimum criteria is a second class upper division 1 Like 1 Share |

[quote author=hardbody post=28069999]Every first class graduate is an automatic employee of his university of graduation as a lecturer assistant while he pursues his Ph.d. Except he chooses to go get work elsewhere. So there is no he won't get a job. Infact having a first class has nullified all the local juju powers. Again except the guy does not wanna start from somewhere.[/quote abi? |

The likes of comments I've read here are rather appalling. Don't be deluded, gone are the days where a first class degree equals automatic employment— you'll still need to prove yourself. The job market is a lot different from school life. Focus & Reading/Roting right are majorly what it takes to make a first class. However, in landing a dream job, alot of things comes to play, part of which may include: Aplomb, eloquence, professional adeptness, how well-informed and smart you are. Also, let's not forget first class degrees are relative. First class graduates of some schools might have nothing on 2:1 graduates of other schools intellectually. It all boils down to the school's or department's curricula and stringency. Either ways, having a first class degree is great, but you'll still need to develop yourself like every other human who wants more out of life. 1 Like |

As an interviewer,u naturally raise d bar when interviewing a 1st class graduate(that's assuming he/she passed d aptitude test phase). Unfortunately, not many 1st class graduates are more informed and enlightened(than their colleagues wit lower degrees) in topics not taught in d classroom. So they fall below d highly (and sometimes unresonably) raised bar, which costs them d job opportunity. I finished school wit a lower degree grade in mechanical engineering but I fare better in aptitude and I understand mechanical principles and interprete engineering diagrams better than some folk of higher degree grades I know. I knew I would face stiff competition because of my class of degree,so I worked a lil harder 2 acquire more knowledge from other areas 2 give me some advantage. Incidentally, these are d things d potential employer is after, and not how well I can prove d Benuolli eqn or other derivations from thermodynamics, theory of elasticity or fluid mechanics. 3 Likes 1 Share |
