Hundreds of Kenyans on Tuesday held peaceful demonstrations in Nairobi to protest at the soaring insecurity in the east African nation and urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to sack top security officials.

The protesters chanted slogans demanding security forces to stop the killings and ensure safety of Kenyans in the wake of the weekend bus massacre in northern Kenya, in which 28 non-Muslims were killed by terrorists.

“We are protesting against the failure of the security system and to demand immediate and effective action to reverse the dire security situation and that is why demonstrators have chosen to occupy Harambee Avenue where the offices of the president, his deputy and other government departments critical to security are located,” they said,

“It seems as if the government agencies only react after an incident occurs and fail to listen to intelligence and set up preventive measures. At the end of the day, it is up to the President, as the leader of the country and patriarch of the government, to ensure that the citizens feel secure and those who are sleeping on the job are held accountable,” they said.

The protesters, who were later joined by Senator Boni Khalwale, demanded the overhaul of security agencies, saying they are responsible for the deaths in insecurity incidents.

Khalwale said he was affected by the Mandera bus attacks on Saturday in which 28 people, 21 of whom were teachers, were killed in Mandera. He said 11 of the dead were from his home county of Kakamega. The senator said it was high time for the government to put competent people in office and the ensure the security of Kenyans

The protesters are also agitating for the sacking of Cabinet Secretary for Interior Joseph Ole Lenku and Inspector-General of police David Kimaiyo, whom they accused of laxity in acting on insecurity in the country.

“The consensus among most of the country’s citizens is that the government is not doing enough to deal with insecurity and offer proper protection to its citizens,” shouted one of the demonstrators.

The protests have been occasioned by an attack on a Nairobi- bound bus from Mandera over the weekend in which 28 people were first tortured then shot dead by Somali militants who later claimed responsibility.

The protesters, who included the civil society and legislators, carried crosses in respect to the Mandera martyrs.

The group under the banner of “Occupy Harambee Avenue” has been mobilizing support for the protest since Sunday through social media.
