Senator Chris Ngige currently representing
Anambra Central at the National Assembly,
on Monday, picked All Progressives
Congress (APC) ticket to contest next
year’s election. He was the sole aspirant of
the party for the election.
This is even as Edo State Governor, Adams
Oshiomhole, on Monday accepted the
resignation of Julius Ihonvbere as
Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
Ihonvbere was said to have submitted his
resignation letter to the governor less than
12 hours after he lost the APC Edo North
Senatorial primaries to a retired army
officer and a lawyer, Francis Alimikhena,
who defeated him with 16 votes.
Alimikhena scored 831 votes to beat the
Professor of Political Science to the
second position with 815 votes while the
incumbent Senator Deacon Domingo had
198 votes to place third.
Although Ihonvbere did not state the
reason for his resignation as secretary to
the state government, the governor,
however, thanked him for his services to
the government and the state and wished
him well in his future endeavours.
Meanwhile, Ngige polled all the 1832 valid
votes in the election, while two votes were
voided.
He picked the ticket just as Afam Victor
Ogene confirmed rumours that he has
joined APC when he attended the
senatorial primary in which Ngige
emerged.
Ogene said he left the All Progressives
Grand Alliance (APGA) to express his
grievance that “nobody should sit in his or
Governor’s Lodge to determine who should
be the party’s flag bearer in an election”.
While accepting his election to contest,
Ngige said the party is ready to do battle
with the rest of the political parties
participating in that election. He lamented
that everything had been done to ‘scotch’
APC, saying those behind such moves
have not succeeded.
Ngige said next year, APC would not only
win but also make forays into other parts
of Anambra State as well as in other parts
of Nigeria.
He said: “We want a change at Federal
level, not that we don’t like the face of the
man there but that Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) has misruled us for 16 years.
“Nigeria is under a yoke. We must
liberalize ourselves. I am humbled today
by your affirmation of my candidacy. You
turned out to affirm me even though you
know I am the sole candidate. I accept the
affirmation given to me’, he said.
Ngige also criticized those who describe
APC as ‘Boko Haram’ party saying that at
this level, Nigeria is not interested in
religious politics but in merit.
Earlier, the National Assembly Primary
Committee led by its chairman, Gideon
Sammani thanked that electoral committee
for a good job and said that those who will
contest under APC are lucky, adding that
“Ngige has all it takes to continue to be
Senator and that Ngige is synonymous
with APC.
Meanwhile, Hon. Ogene who formerly
defected to APC at Ngige’s election
predicted that APC will have majority of
members in 2015. He said that while in
APGA he was a local politician, but now
that he has moved to a party that aims at
the centre, he has become a national
politician and the change will continue.
Ogene was escorted to the arena by
hundreds of his supporters. Apart from
Ogene, the party also received others who
as well decamped to the party. They
include: Chief Uche Anakor from Njikoka
local council, and Michael Ozoemena from
Awka South local council
