THE Chief of Army Staff, Lietenant-General K.T.J. Minimah, in Abuja, on Wednesday, announced that troops are sustaining the tempo of the war against insurgency and will continue to gain upper hand.

The army chief, who was fielding questions from newsmen after commissioning the newly-constructed kennel block for military working dogs, said the dogs were equally at war in the North-East.

According to him, the operation was ongoing and the troops’ morale was high and at the end of the day, light would triumph over darkness.

General Minimah noted that the present security challenges bedeviling the country and the sub-region called for concerted efforts by all officers and soldiers to enhance the capacity of the Nigeria army in whatever little way they could.

The army chief added that in the past 11 months of his leadership of the army, efforts had been made to re-equip, retrain and organise the army to effectively tackle contemporary national security challenges, particularly in the North-Eastern part of the country.

He said one of such efforts was the K9 component of the army, which was established in 2012 and had contributed tremendously to support ongoing army operations nationwide.

The army chief added that the military working dogs had been employed for several duties, including detection of explosives and search and rescue operations.

Furthermore, the army boss disclosed that currently, there were over 20 military working dogs deployed in the North-East theatre, adding that the injection of these dogs into operation zaman lafiya had yielded dividends.

Earlier in his address, Provost Marshal of the Nigerian Army, Major-General Pat Akem, said the resuscitation of its K9 component, which was moribund for several years, was to assist in the ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations, especially in the North-East.
