While there are many controversial elements to the abortion issue, from a strictly clinical point of view, an abortion performed by a medical professional under proper sanitary conditions is a safe and straight forward procedure, especially if done during the early weeks of a pregnancy. There is no scientific evidence which establishes that an abortion performed under these circumstances poses any notable risk to a woman’s future fertility. Most women who have had an abortion go on to have a baby when they are ready without any problems. Having conceived before proves that you ovulate and can get pregnant. So, rest assured that if it's taking longer than you'd like to get pregnant, it's unlikely to be because of the termination.
Occasionally, though, if the termination was not straight forward, it may affect your fertility. There is also a high level of unsafe abortions in our country which pose serious health risks to women. Abortions performed illegally, by unskilled doctors in unhygienic conditions may cause complications in future.
An incomplete termination (retained products of conception) can increase the risk of infection and
scarring. In rare cases, the process of dilation and curettage (D&C) used to clean out the uterus (womb), may cause damage. These include:
(1) Perforation of the uterus, which happens when a surgical instrument pokes a hole in the uterus. It happens in up to 1 percent of women having a D&C . Most of these tears heal on their own. However, if a blood vessel or other organ is damaged, a second procedure may be necessary to repair it.
(2) Damage to the cervix. If the cervix is injured during a D&C, your doctor will treat it by applying pressure or medicine to stop the bleeding, or by suturing the tear.
(3) Scar tissue on the uterine wall. D&C can lead to development of scar tissue in the uterus. This is called Asherman's syndrome and happens most frequently when the procedure is performed after a miscarriage or delivery. This can lead to abnormal, absent or painful menstrual cycles, future miscarriages and infertility. Asherman's syndrome can usually be treated with hormones that encourage growth of healthy uterine tissue, or scar tissue can sometimes be removed with surgery.
(4) Infection. Infection after a D&C is possible, FEMALE VAGINAL DISCHARGE. VAGINAL ITCHING. VAGINAL BLEEDING INFECTION ....... as well as LOW SPERM COUNT for men. WEAK ERECTION. PREMATURE EJACULATION. SMALL PENIS.
An infection setting in after the procedure, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), can cause a problem. If it's not treated early, PID can lead to blockages in and around the fallopian tubes and an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. And there may be scarring at the top of your cervix (the entrance to your uterus) or inside your uterus.
But even if that's not the case for you, you should know that if you've had more than one abortion and get pregnant again later on, you may find that you have what's known as cervical weakness; a weakened cervix that may start dilating prematurely.
