There is no facet of our daily lives you won't find corruption yet we blame it on Mr President. Mr President is fighting corruption at his level, how have you fought corruption at your own level?

You adjust your petrol dispenser against the stipulated calibration from the Weights and Measures Inspectorate...yet blame corruption on Mr. President

You use your pilot vehicles to run against traffic...yet blame corruption on Mr. President

You don't issue jobs and contracts on merit but on man-know-man basis...yet blame corruption on Mr. President

You dock peoples files and folders and wouldn't attend to them unless your stake is defined...yet blame corruption on Mr. President

You receive gratification from vendors for contracts poorly executed...yet blame corruption on Mr. President

You don't join queues but you will rather speak your local dialect to whomever is managing the queue so you can curry favour...yet blame corruption on Mr. President

You cook books, doctor reports...yet blame corruption on Mr. President

You compromise standards for financial gains...yet blame corruption on Mr. President

And many more...

As a people we really need to re-orientate the next generation as corruption is in the DNA of this present generation of Nigerians.

You can hardly strike a honest financial deal with an average Nigerian without him or her trying to swindle you.

If you claim Mr. President is corrupt, then he is one amongst 170m Nigerians. Remove the log from your eyes before removing the speck on his.

These things have been there since the 60s and not even Buhari can remove them unless we change our ways

If I work on my corrupt traits and you work on yours, together we can have a corruption-free society

Wonderful article. Lots of Nigerians especially those shouting change will be quick to blame GEJ for the corrupt practices ravaging the country. But in reality, they themselves are as corrupt as the politicians.
Besides, corruption is not the bane of Nigeria's development. The current structure of Nigeria which does not support the practice of True True Federalism is the number one cankerworm hindering Nigeria from moving forward. Until Nigerians practices True Federalism, corruption, mediocrity and unproductivity will continue to hold sway.

The earlier Nigerians realised that there is no automatic switch where GMB (the Messiah) would switch off corruption in the country , the better for all of us. Corruption has become so endemic in Nigeria that no-one would claim sainthood.
- Bribes are paid before children are admitted into the best federal unity or private secondary schools
- O-level exams are taken by mercenaries for candidates , with the full consent of their parents.
- Admissions into choice courses in the Universities is all about your affiliation with the V.C or Registrar; NEVER on the basis of merit.
- Upon graduation , the few who get employment in Nigeria are the sons/daughters of the well connected dudes.
- Enrollment into the military/paramilitary formations is for the descendants of the generals and the politicians.
- Procuring juicy contracts is about the quality of your "kick-back" & NEVER about the quality of your proposal.

The guy gets married , gives birth to a son and the cycle starts all over again. So the entire life cycle of an average Nigerian is entangled in corruption.
Even you , yes you that is blaming GEJ for the corruption in the country know fully well that you are working in that office of yours today because of the person you know ; not because you are qualified for it.
If the only thing GMB is sure of doing in Aso rock come 2015 is to "FIGHT corruption" , id rather stick with GEJ who would "TRANSFORM corruption" cheesy grin shocked cool tongue

So, because an average Nigerian is corrupt, we should continue to wallow in corruption?

Who are these blockheads?

We are ready to nip corruption in the bud and we shall start with Jonathan. Afterall, he's the 1st Nigerian "Clueless" President to declare publicly that stealing ain't corruption.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step!

Quite a dumb post.

The corruption that affect the lives of average Nigerians the most is public sector corruption.

The ministers and Governors the President appropriates resources to are the culprits-this is the reason Obasanjo started the EFCC,today it is under-used and left to just serve as a rubber stamp agency.

The executive arm of Government,Mr President is the Chief security officer, hence he is the one to ensure appropriations he signs are judiciously used by an effective checking by EFCC,ICPC,DSS and co...the president is in charge of these agencies.

The chief justice as the chief prosecuter ought to be mndated to prosecute by these bodies, all of which are under the Presidency.

Show me any known government official embezzler that Jonathan has prosecuted?

Is not about how many points you make.........op if the government had utilized all those money looted from oil on employment, food, roads and infrastructure. No nigerian will have to steal or beg but instead they spent it on campaign ,save in foreign accounts, they can't even invest the looted money in the country.....when I become the president sure I will loot and also invest all in the country

There is a saying that a leader's sin is a leading sin. You need to understand the IMPORTANCE of a leader and head both in spiritual context and secular context. If you are a Bible reader or christian, you would notice the history of kingdoms where God was displeased with and punished nations or blessed them because of their leaders/kings lifestyle. Also secularly, you will observe how th average Nigeria cooperates and behaves when they leave the shores of Nigeria. The impunity and reckless lawlessness disappears. Nigerians queue, drive carefully, are honest and hardworking, study for tests and do not cheat in examinations when they go to London, Canada and America. This is because the leadership of those countries have put structures in place and are actually working by example and deed to make sure there is order and justice. Our president and his party can barely control themselves, not to mention controlling Patience Jonathan, Fayose, and Fani-Kayode who are party members and representatives. There is no political will and decisiveness to curb corruption or punish corrupt practice. The President continues trying to sell to us that stealing is not corruption and that we should call a thief a thief. That is pointless, what happens after calling a thief a thief? What happens after calling Okonjo-Iweala, Tinubu, Fayose, Fani-Kayode, Fashola, Alameseigha, Obanikoro etc THIEVES? These people are rewarded by the government with juicy positions and honours.
The most powerful orientations we can have are exemplary leadership and integrity. We need exemplary leaders and we need to start punishing corruption. That has to start from the top.

Ever wondered how people lie glibly on phone?
The worst is that adults do it in the presence of younger ones who look up to them, parents do it in the presence of their children, business people do it easily to one another.

Corruption and the tendency to corrupt others is ingrained in the DNA of Nigerians. Even the clergy are not free of it.

So first do your bit before complaining about others.

Those blaming leadership are still the same shouting impunity, obey the law, follow the constitution. Meanwhile they dont obey the laws themselves.

All you need to be a good citizen is already written down in our books and you dont need to jump into the fire because the leader jumped into the fire or is allowing people jump into the fire if the law and common sense says dont jump.

You have said it without knowing. It is WORSE adults do wrong in the present of younger ones. You realize that power of example from leaders. It trickles down. Humans are perverse by default and would do wrong if the environment permits it. Some people tell lies in the presence of their friends but cannot do same at work or in the presence of family. We live in a society that condones evil, the society is a reflection of poor leadership.

I keep saying that thisL

The problem of Nigeria is not corruption!
Corruption is only a byproduct of something else:

The problem of Nigeria is the structure.

To fight corruption, change the structure.

Malaria is a problem in Africa!
What causes malaria/ Mosquito.

Our stupidity is to allow mosquito to breed, then turn to fight malaria.
If we can deal with mosquito, thats the end of malaria.

Thanks, OP.

We are a very corrupt people. Simple.

Our leaders simply reflect us.

We are simply paying the price for our decades of corruption.

We are a corrupt people.

That being said, it still remains the DUTY of government to ensure institutions are empowered to punish corruption.

You have a very VALID point sir.

Our system is faulty. It's engenders corruption and bad governance. Till we change it, like a flat tire, we're going NOWHERE.
