Chapter one.
It is a beautiful morning in Arinwa village. There are
water logs everywhere as it rained cat and dog
overnight. I hate raining days because it will affect
the morning football in our village.
There are few people left in the village because most of the villagers have gone to their farm . Most of the village
buildings were made of mud. The only bungalow made of cement brick in the village is of the village chief in the person of chief
Owodoge aka Gbajumo. Being the wealthiest person in our village.
Arinwa village is ruled and managed by Chief
Owodoge. He has 10 wife's and many. The village
is located in the western region in nigeria.
My names are Kola Arifowose. A native of Arinwa. I and my friend Bidemi are going to the stream as early as usual. Bidemi is the second and
only male child of his parent. They live beside our
house in Arinwa village. They are richer and more
comfortable than us. But not as rich as Gbajumo.
It is our early morning routine to fetch water
because we are in a holiday. A long one. Its the joy
of every child in the village to be on a holiday
because its enjoyment all trough.
"Did you went to gbajumo's house yesterday?" I
asked. "Yes" he replied. Is the movie interesting?" I
asked him again. "Interesting as usual", He
answered. "And why don't you come yesterday", he
asked. "I slept off" I lied.
Gbajumo is the only person in the village that has a
black and white television then. All the children in
the village use to sit in front of his house as early as
5 00 pm. or else. You will have to stand up. The
elders and adult sits in the front. While we children
sits at the back. Gbajumo's children use this to
threaten us in town and school because if we fail to
obey. Then no film for one week.
"Since when did you start sleeping and won't come


and watch kukuleja in gbajumo's house". He queried.
Kukuleja is the episode film showed everyday in
gbajumo's house. "Everything starts in a day". I
replied and walks more hastily.
"And where are you running to". He shouted and
run after me. "Wait now". I know in my heart that
am lying. Guilt made me walks quickly. I didn't went
to gbajumo house the other night because we didn't
eat anything in our house the other night.
I am the only child of my family. Despite the fact
that my dad died minutes after giving birth to me. I
heard that he was killed in his cocoa farm by my
fathers envious friends. Immediately after his death,
his family acquire his properties. They only left his
house for us to live in. Since then we have been
living from hand to mouth. We hardly feed twice a
day.
My mother sell pepper in front our house. From
the profit we feed on. Her family have to her to
leave me and relocate with them but she won't. She
often say that she will prefer to die in poverty than
abandon her only child.
"Stay right there". We heard a commanding voice from
behind. We immediately stop because we knew who
they are. Its tunde, one of gbajumo's child.
"And where are you going?". Tunde questions us.
"We are going to fetch water from the stream. sir"
we answered with fear.
" Have you taken permission" he queried.
"Permission for what" I question him.
With my statement. He was shocked and wonders
what audacity I got to say that to him.
Its not that Tunde is our age mate, at least I am two
years older than. But because he is gbajumo's child,
no one dare talk to him anyhow. Apart from not
watching movie in the night, one will also do some
menial work in his father's house.
Another reason for tunde's freedom is because he
is his fathers eyes. As the last born he is giving all
authority on almost all the elders in Ariwa. He even
command and punish any of his fathers slaves he he
or she misbehaves . So he is a fear factor in our
village.
"See this bastards talking to me o". he said to his
slaves in laughter. They all burst into laughter and
then I know that am in soup that day.
"He is not talking to you o" bidemi pleading and
prostrate. Now my head is cool and ready for the
repercussion.
"Can't you prostrate?" One of the slaves shouted
angrily at me. I lied down instantly and was giving an
unknown amount of bulabula on my body. I cried like
a baby.
"If you dare open that your filthy mouth and talk to
me again, no more kukulaja for you" he commanded.
He faced his slaves and told them not to allow me
fetch water for a whole week.

"How dare you talk to tunde like that", my mother
shouted. My mother is a blonde woman in her early
30s. But seeing her, you will agree with me that she
is in her 60s due to poverty.
"Am still planning to go to gbajumo's house, in
hope maybe I can get some food there". She
continued.

"Now you have spoils everything. Ehn" she
starts sobbing.
"Oh mummy, am only angry in the morning." I
replied.
"You know I haven't eaten anything since
yesterday." I replied crying too. "That's the reason I didn't watch kukulaja yesterday." I said.
As we are talking we heard a knock at the door.
"Who is there", my mother said as she quickly wipe
off her face.
"Its me Atinuke." She answered. Then she enters.
Atinuke is my mums only friend in the
whole town. They started their friendship like three
years ago
"Mama kola (as she usually callls my mum) have you
heard what's going on in town," she
continued. " News is everywhere that you son
insulted tunde. " She said.
" I have heard that" mother replied. "Am still
talking to him about it when you came in." She
replied.
Immediately we a bang on the door. With that
type of knocking. We all know that its gbajumo's
messenger.

Followinq

In rage they took me to the village square and gave me hot 12 strokes of cane. It lands on my wet buttocks bringing along a heaven of pain.

"I told you not to talk but you won't listen", Bidemi starts a conversation after my purnishment.

"If I catch that Tunde, I will beat the hell out of him" I boasted.

"See you o", Bidemi replied. "If you try that now, you will be killed". Bidemi cautioned.

We discussed and as we move near our house. We saw some group of people running helter skelter. We then saw a huge fire coming out of Bidemi's house. We ran toward Bidemi's house as fast as our legs can carry us.

By the time we got there. The house was razed down.

"Where is Mama and peace(as he foundly called his sister)." He asked one of the sympathizers.

"Your sister and mother are in the house"he replied. "Am sure they will be dead"

The news land in a dangerous place in bidemi's hearth as he ran towards the burning mud house. Some group of people holds him from getting inside. I saw my mother weeping uncontrollable as the fire rages on.

The death of bidemi's family left a huge hole in hIs hearth. He has no relattion in ariwa because they are not from the town. He can't even remember his town because he was born in arinwa and his parent don't talk about where they came from.

Now my mums responsibility now doubles as Bidemi lives with us.

One fateful morning barely one month after the fire incidence. My mother was murdered in cold blood in her farm.

I heard the news from my friend in the pound when we went to fetch water.

The news reach me like boko haram bomb. I felt like the world is crashing upon my head. I feel like the earth should open and swallow me. I ran like a man chased by a hundred hungry lions.

When I got to the farm and saw my mother lying lifeless on the floor. Hot tears ran down my black check. Bidemi stood beside me crying. Different thought kept ringing trough my heart.

I can't sleep that night so is Bidemi. We talk about how to survive from this wicked world

"Kola!" Bidemi called me. "Now that we have no sponsor and parent" he continued. "What next step do you think we can make to survive". He asked.

"That I can't think now" I answered. "Am lost in thought too about the next step, now that mother is dead". We laid silent for about forty minutes after that.

"I think we should just leave this village for good" Bidemi breaks the silence.

Suddenly akin one of our friends rushed in.

"Why do you bang in like that " I asked angrily.

"You are no longer safe in this town, the two of you" he said catching is breath.

"What happened ". Bidemi and I chorused

"Tunde just told his dad that he heard the two of you planning how to kill gbajumo day before yesterday before your mothers death" he continued. "His guards are coming for you now' run for your lives" he said and ran out.

Chapter 2

We are in a state of anxiety and confusion. I quick pack some of my clothes and some valuables. Bidemi has no property before as all his clothes burnt in the house

Bidemi sat down and don't know what next to do he just sat on the only sofa in the house.

Suddenly we heard a knock on the door. We know its gbajumo guards. We quickly pack the remaining things in the house and we ran out through the back yard.

We ran as quickly as our legs can carry us out of the village. We didn't even bother that its the middle of the night.

We successfully ran out of the town borders and make our way to the high ways Suddenly we ran across a old BMW in the middle of the night. The driver pack beside the rough road, he alighted from the car and came toward us.

"What are you down here by this time of the night" he asked.

"We were sent away from our vilage" we answered in hope that he can help us.

"Oh dear, get into the car and let me help you out of here" he said and head straight

"Thank you sir" we chorused as we follow him

"So why are you sent parking from your village?" He sasked"

"Our village head son accused us of conspiracy against the baale." bidemi answered.

"We ran away because the penalty for that in our village is death "he continued as tears ran out of his eyes

"What a wicked world" he replied as he drives with a dim front light.

After a few minutes he managed to ask again "what about your parents, don't you have parents?"

They died in the last two weeks" I managed to answer with tears. "My friends mother and sister died in an inferno before my mother was killed in her farm"

"Oh my" he answer closed to tears. "Am Mr Aribila.

" Will you work for me?" He asked.

Without thinking twice, I and bidemi chorused. "Yes sir, just take us away from here sir"

"Okay no problem"he assured us.

"I live in the city of lagos, We are now going to my house" he assured us
