Why Do Nigerians Always Praise Leaders After Their Tenure? by bilms(m): 11:20pm On Dec 21, 2014
Which of the rulers and leaders of this nation did we not ask to go? Yet when they go away, we turn around to run after them proclaiming them saints and saviors. Did we not ask the colonial masters to go? After they left, where has been our destination? Did we not ask Balewa to go? He was even killed. Did we not ask Ironsi to go? He also was killed.

What about Gowon whom we nicknamed Go On With One Nigeria? Did we not ask him to go? The great Murtala Muhammed was asked to go as he was also killed. Did we not ask Gen Obasanjo to go as he struggled to hand over? What about Shehu Shagari, the first Executive President of Nigeria? Was he not asked to go with the stories of corruption? At last he was forced out and denied the mandate given to him by Nigerians.

Buhari emerged with the promise to end corruption and while he was focused on corrupt leaders, what happened? Did we not ask him to go? IBB came with the title of Military President and opened the way for women's involvement in governance of the nation. Yet, we asked him to go. In trying to go, he announced stepping aside and brought in Shonekan whom we all rejected as his government was declared illegal. He was asked to go while Abacha emerged with a renewed determination to move the nation to another level. Did we not ask him to go? Were people not celebrating the death of Abacha?

Abdulsalami came in with the commitment to move us to the next level. Did we not ask him to go? He persevered and handed over to Obasanjo, the only Nigerian who made a second coming after 20 years. At his second coming, he completed two tenures and while he wanted to open the realm of the first ever third tenure, we asked him to go.

Umaru Musa Yaradua emerged as the next President and despite all his good intentions, how many of us supported him? We opposed him until death and he had to go. The emergence of Goodluck Jonathan was strengthened even by the leaders of the opposition movement who all declared that GEJ must be sworn in.

Now, GEJ has come and in his desire to fulfill the constitutional provision for two tenures, we are asking again that GEJ should go. Unfortunately, all those we asked to go in the past have been proclaimed the heroes of our present nation. They are our chief consultants now on who should lead us. Some have even been called to consider coming back again. What if we have made those we rejected in the past to serve as the heroes of the moment?

If we had known that one day a doofus man like Jona would be a President, we would have allowed them to rule us forever.

Have you seen anyone praise IBB? His biggest achievement is institutionalising corruption and creating billionaires. I equate him with Jonathan as equals in posterity.
