Three soldiers attached to the Joint Military Task Force in the Niger Delta, Operation Pulo Shield, have been ambushed and killed by gunmen operating along the waterways of Bayelsa State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the soldiers were killed on Tuesday, barely four days after the same number of JTF soldiers lost their lives in a pirate attack along Santa Barbara, in the Nembe area of the state.

In the Santa Barbara incident, which took place on Sunday, the sea robbers seized a military gunboat to escort items from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Brass terminal owned by a multinational oil company.

It was learnt that before the JTF search-and-rescue team could recover the bodies of the Brass-bound soldiers, gunmen, suspected to be sea robbers launched a fresh attack on soldiers at Azagbene in the Ekeremor Local Government Area.

It was further learnt that a boat conveying the soldiers to their routine duties in the area came under attack about 11.30am on Tuesday.

A security source, who pleaded, anonymity said after wasting the lives of the soldiers, the gunmen stole their rifles with180 ammunition.

He also said the civilian driver of the boat was not spared as he was also killed by the hoodlums.

He said, “This is a bad time for soldiers. Just four days after three soldiers whose corpses have yet to be found were killed, three more JTF soldiers were also attacked and killed in similar circumstances on Tuesday.

“The soldiers were ambushed and killed by the gunmen who made away with their rifles and ammunition. The Niger Delta, particularly the waterways in Bayelsa State is gradually returning to the dark days of militant activities. Losing six soldiers within four days is massive.”

When contacted on the development, the JTF Commander, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Atewe, did not pick his calls though his phone rang out several times.

Also, a text message sent to his mobile phone was not responded to as of press time.

However, a ranking officer of the JTF, confirmed the incident.

The officer, who did not want his name mentioned, told our correspondent that three unnamed soldiers and a civilian boat driver lost their lives.

He said they were attacked on the creeks of Azagbene, in the Ekeremor area of the state by pirates.

This is more like a warm-up to 2015. If for any reason GEJ does not return to Aso rock.... say bye to oil money.

To people complaining about non-payment of salaries... just wait till there is no more allocation from the center

To those complaining about exchange rate... wait until there is no more foreign exchange and dollar goes for 300 naira

This is no threat. ..its reality staring us in the face. If the northern elements kept true to their words of making the country ungovernable. ... expect the creeks to keep true their words too.

The only hope for Nigeria is true federalism. ... lets get back to our regions to work it out.

Bokoharam takes lives of people in their operating environment.

Militants acts in their backyard and nation comes crawling. The impact of a renewed militancy in this period of low crude prices and struggling foreign exchange will crumble whatever is left of the country and its economy.

human lives would be lost if BH steps up their campaign of terror in terror in the NE.But f the militants resurface, economic damage would be catastrophic. Looking at the bigger picture,I think handling the militancy in the SS should be one that has to be taken seriously. The multiplier effect is unimaginable.

This seems to be a case of sea pirates. Though most may be indirectly linked to some militants. True Federalism may be a sure panacea to some of our problems in this country. Let's States country their resources. It's well with Nigeria in Jesus name, Amen!

The real Hiccups bedevillinq this nation is lack of Quality Leadership which GEK is totally Bereft of..

Pray tell, When, last did our "Supposed President" took time out and come down to this South South or other parts of the country and prolly meet the people? - That's the main problem, sittinq in Abuja from Jan-Dec indirectly disconnectinq with what's going on in some parts and expectinq this kind of another round of millitancy problems not to crop up., he must be kiddinq.

The thing is, He should try as much as possible to connect with the people that voted him into office..Try find out What's really going in different regions of the country. That's what being a leader is.....It's called being proactive

A textbook case, can be seen in the US where Pres.Obama is always movinq round the country to meet the people from time to time..Is that too hard to do?

u are correct. one has to fear the militants. if buhari wins, then bokoharam will be a simple thing compared to the militants that will rise up. real terror will be unleashed.

Stop making noise ... for all the times he was in akwaibom for launching the stadium, landed at PH and was recieved by amaechi couple of times, has been to delta on over 4 different occasions to commission projects.

You APC lots are liars.
Note: GEJ is the last president of a united Nigeria. Quote me in 2019.

The first thing that an APC government has to do is immediate rescue of the Niger Delta from militants. This has to be a multi pronged approach involving civil society empowerment programs backed by strong military presence including air surveillance throughout the region. Corruption would have to be completely eliminated from the Niger Delta JTF so that it can be effective. All developmental programs in the region should be fast tracked and must be made visible and impactful. The Jonathan government has been a disaster for the region, standing up militant billionaires in an atmosphere of poverty and leaving the collective aspirations of the people unachieved.

Let there be no oil money. That is better! Isn't it better to know that militants have crippled our oil production than for us to be producing currently and no one knows how the money is being shared. Let's tackle the problem from the root and not some fake amnesty that encourages them to stockpile arms.

Neither you nor your APC chieftains have a feasible plan. Good thing is there is no vacancy in asorock come 2015...so you have 4 more years to come up with a realistic plan for 2019.

I am not voting for a mentally retarded president and be threatened by stark illiterate Tom Polo (not semi illiterate) to mortgage the future of my country because they have temporary close proximity to an increasingly unwanted wasting resource. I would rather support the new government to hit them hard from the air and institute a naval blockade of the entire region. It will be nice to see all the Asari Dokubos start this war they have been threatening finally. We are waiting expectantly.

Some eejits see this as a case of genuine agitation by the ND. NO! This is insurgency.
I said it to some lousy forumites sometime ago that amnesty to militants is like putting lipsticks on a pig. It is still a pig. The best was to put down these militants is to apply the laws. Anyone involved in criminal activities must face the music. Death penalty for those who kill, long prison sentences for vandals, etc.
If this had been applied to BH, we wont be where we are today. GEJ (who obviously isnt intelligent) thinks that by paying a few masters, he has secured the ND militants. FALSE!
For sensible Nigerians, this is a prelude to the next 4 years if GEJ gets your votes. ND militancy will hold the whole region hostage. BH will capture the whole NE because our CinC is cl.ueles.s
