Most of us know that Boxing Day is the day after Christmas.

For us in Nigeria, it is a way to make the public holidays even longer and spend more time with family.

Boxing Day is a public holiday celebrated in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and many of the commonwealth countries like Nigeria and India.

The common story told about boxing day is that it is a day set aside to unwrap and get rid of all the wrapping paper and boxes in which your Christmas presents arrived.

Traditionally December 26, is the day to open the ‘Christmas’ box to share its contents with the poor. Some people suggest that Boxing Day has its origins in England during the Middle Ages, where servants who worked on Christmas Day were given the next day off and presented with gift boxes from their employers.

Time also suggests that the Church of England might have started the tradition of boxing day.

So now when your children ask you why we celebrate Boxing Day, you can have answers to give them.

Most people in Nigeria continue their Christmas activities on Boxing Day; visit family and friends, eat leftovers, drink, relax with the family and watch TV.
But you have to agree, that after all that food, drink and merry-making done on Christmas Day, a day should be set aside for rest right?

We hope you enjoy today.

Happy Boxing Day!!!
