I read the part where they area required to pay taxes to different bodies because are Nigerians/Cameroonians

It is left for the cost to carry or its own independent investigations.
Well the issue of illegal taxation is a sad thing in West Africa. The police and other tax is illegal and not state backed (excerpt Cameroon law is different from what is obtained globally). Again, there is no case against the Cameroon government. The best they can do is write their local government/Governor and appeal for him/her to intervene in the multiple taxation

Barcanista, I can feel your pain bro . Gen Yakubu Gowon took that decision just to win the war against biafrans. The biafrans have been using Cameroon to gain some war points but Gowon had to enter a deal with the Cameroonian President so as to prevent Biafrans from Using Cameroon. Gowon made that decision to Unite we Nigerians.
u want to tell me there is no any other alternatve 4 him to win d war excpt by sellin peoples home land

Despite Cameroon being a partner in the war on terror, Nigeria will offer a response that ensures the resettlement of those displaced people back on their land in Bakassi.

What you people don't understand is that since then, president and visions of Cameroonians have changed.

Just the way GEJ's diplomatic governance is different from OBJ's governance.

It was unnecessary to cede part of your territory just to win a war. I find it not only disgusting but wicked because there are other diplomatic ways to win cooperation with neighbouring country without losing an inch of what you are protecting. That is why I said Gowon was taken over by his relative low literacy. It is sad and painful though.
Bro, I believe all other diplomatic options have been considered but they all prove abortive .. For gowon to have ceded that part of the country to Cameroon that clearly shows that Nigeria needed Cameroon as at that time to win the war...

God Bless you for this post!

Even Obasanjo acceded to this nonsense, for selfish, parochial reasons! He was eyeing hsi 3rd term agebda and did not want to "rock the boat". wink wink

For now, l think the "best option" is for these unfortunate Nigerians to move-out of that place!.. for now!!

And we must remember that OBJ should have exercised the option that "Every people have a right to self-determination" by insisting that the ICJ include in its judgement, the right for the people of Bakassi to decide through a REFERENDUM, whether they still want to be a part of Cameroon, say in 10 or 20years time.... but the Eediots did not have that sort of sense!

This is the kind of miscarriage of justice that you get, when being ruled by Mofos..... and it seems Nigeria has a destiny with being ruled by complete, crass, clueless people.... and it keeps getting worse like the present shoeless one occupying the place.

Its not about Political party, its about the personality of the person in power!

What concerns Buhari with the actions of Gown? When Buhari was in power he never agreed to give an inch of Nigeria to anybody. It was Obasanjo due to his hypocrisy that agreed to the ICJ's ruling. He should have insisted on not giving in. What a shame

At the bolded:
If we go by the "situation on ground" back then, then we can at least, if not agree, UNDERSTAND why Gowon took that option!

1.) General Gowon did not want any part of Nigeria (Biafra in particular, to be divided. If not for Gowon, the Ebele Azikwe of today which Igbos are supporting, will never have been able to rule over the whole of Nigeria, at best, he will be President of Biafra but then, l dont even see some Ijaw man ruling over Ala-Igbo! shocked shocked

2.) To Stop any war, you first need to STOP THE INFLOW OF WEAPONS! Now, lets not get sentimental about the "morals/right or wrong" of the war itself, lets just focus on the need to STOP THE WAR.
Bakassi is a Port City on the Atlantic Ocean and various opportunist were using the war to make themselves rich by supplying weapons, through it, to Biafra. It happens everywhere war is ongoing, (Ukraine, Somalia, Turkey-Syria border, Russia-Afghanistan, e.t.c).
Dont forget that some countries were in favour of Nigeria breaking up, even up till now, as they see and recognize that "there is power and strength" in a large country with a large population, if well-governed

(that "IF" is very important as we have failed to realize that potential due to mis-governance!
Countries like India, China and Brazi have been able to "leverage" on such BIG Land Mass and Population ...and are WORLD POWERS TODAY)

I said "opportunist"!.. because these countries were practically selling weapons to "BOTH SIDES" of the war!
Just like America trains Syrian insurgents, trains Sunni opposition in Iraq and at the same time, sells weapons to the Government of those countries to fight back! shocked shocked
Its all about "making money off a war"... and its big business!

3.) Gowon was getting overwhelmed by the war and influx of weapons which continue to prolong the war. Cameroon claimed it cannot stop the inflow of weapons through Bakassi since it is Nigerian territory, Gowon himself could not as his Army was over-stretched already!
Cameroon "indirectly suggested" to Gowon that they can, if Bakassi was part of their country!
Gowon chose to "close that hole' by agreeing to cede Bakassi to Cameroon, IF THEY CAN ENSURE THAT WEAPONS DONT PASS THROUGH THE PLACE!
That "bad decision" achieved its aim and Cameroon clamped down on the inflow of weapons through that place.

4.) Now, that was a very bad and cheap "concession" to make but then, it is the sort of desperate decisions that a lot of leaders make, when faced with a war situation.
Obama and George Bush have made such decisions as well.
Even President Putin of Russia annexing Crimea, is a modern-day example of a "bad decision" made in the heat of war" ...to prevent a greater evil!
I think if Gowon was "smart", he should have included a "RETURN CLAUSE" in that agreement, knowing that the people in that place are also Nigerians! OBJ and his "SAN Lawyers" too were less smart when they took the matter to ICJ as they too should have insisted and included such clause in the judgement!

For "some" Igbos to go around mocking "ordinary Bakassi people" who are the people suffering the blow-back now while they were never consulted or agreed to the ceding of Bakkassi to Cameroon, just to SPITE THEM.... is an act of Evil and a case of cutting-off your nose, just to spite your face! Now, if you are a "Biafran", l dont expect you to agree with me on this as your "objective" is to get the weapons to further prosecute the war... and that is understandable to me.

As the "beneficiaries" of this action (still being Nigerians and part of the "Complete Nigeria"wink, the best ALL of us can do for the people of Bakassi is to show gratitude, show sympathy and show solidarity with them.
They paid the price, even without their personal consent! I sincerely hope that one day, Cameroon will do the honorable thing by returning the land to Nigeria, knowing fully well that it "took advantage" of the war situation in Nigeria back then, to gain Bakassi

BTW: I know that if Nigeria gets its act right and we become "what we are destined to become", to get Bakassi back is a very simple matter, even Cameroon will not do much as a whimper! But right now, with the "class of thieving fools in power" ... we are on a long thing!
We have lost respect in the eyes of the world, especially under the current Jonathan Govt, so much that Cameroon and about any tiny nation, disrespects us!

Re: Cameroonian Soldiers Chase Nigerians Out Of Bakassi (Photo) by zendy: 11:48pm On Dec 29, 2014
Bakassi is a classic case of where a lot of Nigerians tend to be hypocritical. Neither Nigeria, Cameroun or indeed the world care about what the indigenous people that inhabit Bakassi want. This issue goes at the heart of why Nigeria will never function as a country. The right thing to do in all situations like this is to ask the indigenous that inhabit a land mass what they want and their wishes respected. Who has the right to tell an Igbo man,Ijaw man,Ibibio man or Bakassi man if they are Nigerians? It is the right of people to decide for themselves who they are. What should happen is for a referendum or plebiscite to be conducted in not only Bakassi, but all other people in Nigeria like the south-south and South-east who have long been agitating for their right to self determination. Even recently in Britain, the people od Scotland were given a referendum if they want to be an independent nation or if they want to remain in the United Kingdom, they chose to stay in the UK. But in a backward country like Nigeria, the general notion is "you must remain Nigerian" no matter what. From this "prison" known as Nigeria, people expect a nation to evolve. I laugh.
