The intra-city train services connecting major areas in Kaduna was yesterday commissioned by Vice President, Namadi Sambo.

The commissioning ceremony took place at the Kaduna Junction Rail Station where the vice president said government was committed to resuscitating and modernizing rail lines in the country to reduce transportation problems, especially in the rural areas.

According to Sambo, more modern coaches would be procured for intra and inter-city rail services.

Also speaking at the ceremony, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Engineer Adesyi Sijuade, said the Kaduna mass transit train service is operated by the corporation in conjunction with the state government.

He said the intra-city rail service will run through Kawo, NDA, Sokoto Road, Central Market, Kaduna Junction, St. Gerald, Television Garage and Deeper Life Stations. He said Kaduna was the second city after Lagos to have the Modern Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) service.

His words “The DMU is made up of two motor cars and three passenger cars. The motive power in each motor car is provided by one 1200HP Cummins diesel engine while one 166hp Cummins generator provides auxiliary power. The DMU is designed for a maximum speed limit of 100km per hour and adopts an air brake system. Each passenger car has the capacity for 72 passenger seats and 108 standing, making a total of 540 passengers for the three cars.”

The Minister of Transport Senator Idris Umar, also spoke at the ceremony. He said work on the Kaduna-Abuja rail line is at 90 per cent completion and modern train services would commence soon.

He said the work for the construction of coastal cities rail line would soon start while the Gombe-Maiduguri line would be rehabilitated when the insurgency subside

This is transformation?. The rail line you are talking about is older than Nigeria itself.Thank God for Chinese aggressive marketing and need to sell their ancient stock of trains we now have a few more locomotives and coaches. I've once decided I won't vote for either candidate but...

Things are hard even though Nigeria keeps ranking among the growing economy in Africa on paper, wonder how because in reality it's to the contrary.

We should give GMB a trial for 4years as we have seen what GEJ has done for 6years (transforming the railway not Nigeria for 6years and to be continued for another 4years?) and if he's not capable we vote him out that's the essence of democracy. I heard GEJ saying in 2011's campaign that 4years is enough to transform Nigeria and because of that he won't contest again. That's even enough and I know the cabals will prefer GEJ because it's to their advantage.

I heard some people saying we can't go to the past but they forgot that before OBJ ruled us for 8yrs as a president he's once ruled us as head of state, we are not going to the past by the grace of God.

Doing the same thing over and over again expecting different result they say is foolish, stupid, senseless etc. Let's try somebody and something else in our democracy. Don't let us be fooled or be clouded by religion and ethnicity.

Precisely, I'll not take away some of his achievements but then his administration has been characterised by incessant cases of corruption.
He has never stated 'anti corruption' as one of the principles of his regime which indicates a tacit approval of stealing whist he's building to me.

But what is obvious at least to me is GEJ's negligence to corruption, embezzlement by members, majorly in his executive council....
Dis is what he needs to address...
