UNILORIN VC Seeks Adoption Of E-voting Innational Elections by calebians1(m): 2:56am On Jan 14, 2015
:
Barely seven months after the University of Ilorin
Students’ Union successfully pioneered the use of
electronic voting in the country, another student
organisation in the institution, the Unilorin
Postgraduate Students Association (POGSASS),
has also pulled through a similar feat.

Following these pioneering efforts, the Vice-
Chancellor of the University, Prof. AbdulGaniyu
Ambali (OON), has advocated the adoption of the
electronic voting system for national elections in
the country.

Prof. Ambali made the recommendation last
Monday (January 5, 2014) during the swearing in
of the new POGSASS Executive Committee
members elected last December through the
electronic voting system.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor
(Management Services), Prof. Yisa Fakunle, the
Vice-Chancellor noted that Nigeria is ripe for e-
voting, saying that the simplicity of the system,
which Unilorin has successfully used twice, easily
recommends it for use at the national level.

Prof. Ambali said, “Nigeria is ripe for e-voting. The
University of Ilorin has done it twice. If units within
a country can successfully do it, there is no
reason why we cannot do it nationally.

He pointed
out that the national electoral body, the
Independent National Electoral Commission (ÍNEC),
“can come and see how we do it and see the one
that is applicable to them.”
