Residents of Apapa recently witnessed a mild drama between a man and a well known prostitute in the area. It was early morning and the man was on his way to work when the prostitute emerged from nowhere, held the man by his shirt and started shouting, “Thief! Thief! as she rained blows on him.

Ifeanyi Orji
The confused and obviously embarrassed man struggled in vain to free himslef from the prostitute. And his discomfiture worsened as more and more people gathered to witness the drama. He whispered something into the woman’s ears, apparently in a bid to calm her down, but that seemed to infuriate the woman further as she dealt more blows on him and cursed him endlessly.

As the crowd wondered what could prompt a prostitute to so violently attack a man, she began to tell her story.

According to her, the man named Ifeanyi Orji, had come to her in her brothel a few days before the incident, but he turned out to be more than an ordinary customer. The prostitute alleged that Orji gave her , snacks, which she ate and became very weak. He then had sex with her before making away with her jewelry and other valuables he could lay his hands on in her room.

Orji, however, denied the allegation of stealing. Speaking to our correspondent at the Lagos State Command headquarters of the Nigeria Police, Ikeja, where he was later detained, he said, “My brother, that prostitute only hates me. Although I would not deny having sex with her, it is not true that I stole her things.”

The police, however, said the prostitute might be telling the truth. The commissioner of police in Lagos State, Marvel Akpoyibo, told Saturday Punch that Orji was rescued from the mob who were ready to deal with him for descending so low as to steal from a prostitute.

According to Akpoyibo, based on police investigation, the prostitute that recognised and embarrassed Orji was not his first or only victim. He said there were other prostitutes who would want to lay their hands on Orji for the pain he had caused them.

Saturday Punch gathered that Orji specialised in drugging prostitutes and making away with their jewelry and other valuables.

Orji, however, denied the allegations. He said, “I am not a thief. It was condition that brought me into this.”

He told our correspondent that he was a comfortable family man until he lost his business to bad investment. “In fact, things got so bad that I had to send my wife and the rest of the family to the village.”

He said he stayed back in Lagos in order to hustle to make ends meet. “But things were not as easy as I expected. And you know that my wife is not here. So, whenever I feel the urge, I go to prostitutes. I do go to them, which is not a crime. I only drug them because I cannot afford their fees. I did not steal from them. That is demeaning,” he said.

He said that the prostitute that recognised him at Apapa cooked up the story of stealing in order to get the police involved in the matter. “And the policemen that met with the other prostitute that I slept with asked them leading questions,” he said.

Akpoyibo said that the investigation into the case would continue. “The suspect will be arraigned in a court of competent jurisdiction as soon as investigation is completed,” he said.

The prostitute patron must have decided to impose an informal tax on the women he frequented, to help disseminate the the wealth created by bordellos into the surrounding host community, even as he inseminated the hookers.

Really though, drugging any human being is a murderous thing to do. Who knows what other silent victims lie in this man's wake.

As punishment, the culprit ought to be drugged and subjected to a sex-change operation before he regains consciousness
