Court: No Troops For Elections by tunwumi: 5:21am On Jan 30, 2015
A Federal High Court sitting in Sokoto yesterday ruled that it is unconstitutional for the military to be deployed for election purposes.

Justice Mohammed Rilwan ruled that other than for the purposes of protecting the nation’s territorial integrity, no constitutional provision allows for the deployment of the military for elections.

The suit challenging the deployment of military for election duties was instituted by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, Bello Goronyo, representing Goronyo Constituency.

Justice Rilwan added that” for the federal government to do so, it must have taken recourse to the National Assembly, which would enact such law”.

This means PDP will not be able to intimidate people with the deployment of soldiers to the street as they used to do. A minus for them there

Also, touts and tugs can take over pooling booth form corruption laden and ill equipped police.

Zokers.
So all the soldiers deployed in armed robbery squad and counter-insurgency operations should be withdrawn?
Is this a sharia court judge?

Very good development. I hope Jonathan will obey the rule of law cos he has always been known as a civilian dictator.

Well said judge

Election is a job for the police and Civil defence,

Soldiers should face Sambisa and flush out Boko Haram

Whether Police o,or Civil defence o,or the Army,or even the Guard Brigade,I no just trust them to provide better security at the election centres. They are easily manipulated.

Well the court had rightly done its job having upheld the provisions of the constitution.

But consequences will far far outweigh the ban.

We should anticipate a double or a high level thuggery.

The police force that we know in Nigeria can be easily overpowered and manupulated. On that front,I say yes to deploying soldiers at the polls. Nigerians only behave themselves when they see soldiers. Anybody who claims to be intimidated by the sight of soldiers, probably have alterior motives.

Boko haram judge. Whether they like it or not troops will litter the whole of Lagos, Kano,PH,kadunna etc

Say no to rigging, violence and killing of Corp members. A sokoto high court does not have jurisdiction outside sokoto. It is only an Abuja high court that can issue such orders

No troops for election is not a welcomed development at all. If they are talking about 'heavy' deployment of troops for election purpose, then we would gladly accept that. There needs to be military presence on the day of election. Like in my town, sometimes, the PDPians and other parties don't allow the results to be counted and announced in the Polling Units even with the presence of Police. But when Soldiers are ordered to come to such Polling Units, they would have no option than to watch as they count the Votes!

Why, Why, Why wouldn't you have sense? I'm still recovering from your PAT error from yesterday.

Though there is legal sense in this ruling, I'm still quite concerned as the absence of military personnel may remove an important deterrent for electoral violence.

Re: Court: No Troops For Elections by blank(f): 2:31pm On Jan 30, 2015
FGN should wait until a few days to the election and then appeal so that it will drag until after elections. The only reason i feel a little bit safe during election periods is that soldiers are around.

Everything is conspiring (rightly so) against the PDP and GEJ.

My very close pal (a staunch supporter of GEJ) had to admit to me recently that the only way GEJ can win the February poll is by massive rigging with the aid of military officers.

I can imagine how the PDP must be feeling right now that their only hope has been buried.
