macof: Don't be deceived, the Osu and Ohu caste system is exactly as described. While the osus were believed to have been sacrificed to gods and atimes reflect in the names they bear, the Ohus were slaves that were owned by their masters who bought them. At the death of a master, one or two of his slaves might be chosen to be buried alive to continue serving him in the great beyond. Just like the writer said, they suffer discrimination to the extent that despite how rich any of them could be, there are still things he cannot do. Yeah, it's that bad |

prissyluv: my brother, it all boils down to how financially stable u are, if u are made and possibly the financial pillar of the family nobody would tell u that nonsense, you can always go ahead and marry her if they say no because after all they need u more than u need them. let me also add here that osu is not only a man that marrys an osu lady but also if ur parents or ur grand parents happens to be adopted as in asked by another family to come and live with them u or ur parents are automatically osu as u or ur parents are not a free born of that particular family. 1 Like |

I am from Abia State,Umuahia-Bende axis to be precise.I have never come in contact nor heard of Osu practice all my lifetime despite the fact that I grew up in the east.I only read about it in the novels.my take on this is that its more theoritical than practical.I can say confidently that there is no Osu in Abia State. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Point of correction for the op. Nwadiala in igbo is not "son of the soil." Son of the soil is Nwa (not even nwa-afo). The term nwadiala refers to the childern of your sister, in other words those who have their maternal root in that particular place where they are called "nwadiala." 8 Likes |

The OSU caste system is barbaric to say the least, and any educated Igbo person who still indulges such unreasonable and inhuman practice is not fit to live in this modern world. I am aware that in some parts of the southeast, some people exploit the OSU practice to gain undue political advantage over others, but such people seem to fail to realize that when a particular group of people is continuously denied their rights to political emancipation, a time would come when violence change becomes inevitable. If you are in doubt, find out the cause of the continued crises between Fulani settlers and the berom in plateau state. I am not a prophet of doom but it's high time the elders of igboland addressed such issues before it spirals into what nobody expected. |

Never seen an osu since my 29years on earth, In my part of Igbo which comprises of Awgu, Aninri and Oji River, we don't practise that. And I have gone through Igbo land except Abakaliki and I have never seen any one refered to as Osu. 3 Likes |

Hello everyone! I want to state categorically clear that osu is hardly an issue in the contemporary Igbo society. Just think about numerous famous Igbos bearing Nwaosu (decendant/children of Osu) as surname. They are all well received and celebrated in their various communities. In today's world young ones marry whosoever they want be it oyibo, people from other tribes and nationalities, Osu is hardly one of the issues to be bothered about. There is this girl that bears Nwosu that graduated with first class in my department, You think peradventure it happened we chose to marry anyone can stop me because she is "osu"? Believe me most people think like me except few old conservative people and their opinion hardly matter. Just like killing of twins babies, selling people out to slavery and other nefarious practices found in our culture have been phased out. If there there is a group that embraces change that comes along with civility, Igbo are the one! no one gives a dammn about if you osu or not, become a success and people will celebrate and associate with you! who do hell even keep track of who is osu or who is their children or let alone children of their children? 3 Likes |

sonnie10: Most people from Imo and Abia use nwadiala while Anambrarians use nwafor. Nwadiana in Anambra means our sister's children, while the nwadiana refers to their mother's people as ndi nna-ochie/nnochie. |

CaptainOjemba: It exists in Anambra and parts of Imo but nobody still discriminates against them just that people have reservations when it gets to marriage talks. If you come to part of Anambra where it exist you wont tell who is who until it gets to marriage but intermarriages has been going on. |

[s] Radoillo:[/s] What is d meaning of nwosu? Go and trace the root of such families bearing nwosu as surname. U will arrive at osu origin. Some bear the surname by marriage, if it were to be those days, they have contacted d osu thing. Infact the traditional ruler of Awka is Eze uzu Gibson Nwosu. To tell u it's no longer an issue. Trace his lineage u will arrive at osu root. Osu system is dead Let's Stop flogging it. Same way killing of twins stopped. 1 Like |

Arysexy: You don't need to call them OSU but the discrimination is already there. When their sons are not allowed to marry the free born daughters or vice versa, what do u call that. Like I said earlier OSU was abolished long time ago, but believe me the practice which is the discrimination is still there. What people fear is not the fear of associating with them but the fear of what people will say when they too will be seen as an OSU because It's believed that once you associate with them, you have practically become an OSU. In my part. It is a crime to call one paid. it has been eradicated. Infact the Catholic church will sanction any parent that deny their children marriage over osu issue. this is my first time of hearing this, and I don't think it's proper because no church or religion has the right to dictate to a parents where the sons or daughters will marry from. Marriage is a choice and a decision from both family. They must accept each others flaws if not there is no marriage. Catholic Church or not some parents still forbid their children from marrying an OSU. |

prissyluv: hian, wc 1 is ORU again is it the pple from ORU cos i'm from Oru west LGA in Imo state and i've never hrd of ORU. @topic...this Osu thing is highly exaggerate, the 1st time I came across it was in books as my parents or relatives even those living in my hometown have never said anything about it or pointed out that this family is an osu family blabla bla and if it is still practised I would sure have hrd it from my Dad cos he's very passionate about the Igbo culture and likes talking to us about it. |

Jennydoris: Nne, you can lie I swear. How haven't you seen an OSU before but the practice is still very much alive in your town. To the topic, Osu caste system is dead in virtually all part of Igboland. I grew up in the East, but uptill now I am yet to see an Osu. Infact considering the discrimination meted to them favoured them, which turn most of them according to history as the Economic, Academic and Political gaints in Igboland. 1 Like 1 Share |
