The Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) yesterday condemned the undue involvement of military in politics, warning that the Yoruba nation would stand alone if a coup takes place due to excesses of the country’s political leaders at all levels.

The ARG, a pan-Yoruba socio-economic and political organisation, demanded dispassionate restructing of Nigeria as an antidote “to the unitary system of government imposed on the country at the inception of military rule in 1966.”
The group outlined these standpoints in a communique it issued after a summit of Yoruba leaders held at the Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan on Tuesday under a theme, “The Change the Yoruba People Will Vote for.”

The communique, which was signed by the group’s National Chairman, Hon. Olawale Oshun, said the Yoruba people “will not be part of any country that is forcibly taken over by any military insurrection, no matter the direction or purpose of any such self-styled messiahs.
“We as a people know what we want, and military rule is clearly not part of it. Also, anyone who is thinking that the balkanisation of the country on the premises of North and South could be a way out should better think deeply.

“The Yoruba people would not be part of any such balkanised unit; it is definitely not one we would demand as a change. We wish, as we are now, to be part of a democratic, well-governed and truly federal Nigeria, in all intents and purposes; a Nigeria where the rights and desires of the component nationalities are guaranteed.”

The communique said the change Yoruba people want and would vote for “is good governance that guarantees freedom for all and life more abundant, one that secures our desire to develop our God-given potentials at our own pace as a people.”
It, however, warned that if Nigeria were schemed to become a banana and undemocratic republic with the muzzling of its democratic institutions as demonstrated by this poll shift or divided in any manner, the Yoruba nation, as a people, would opt out to become a democratic nation as would be acceptable by our people.

It, also, warned that the Yoruba people would no longer subscribe “to inexplicable tardiness in realising our dreams for development. We must join others to discourage those who have turned politics into a full time job and only our best should be encouraged to come forward to represent our people.

“Any serious governmental action at the inception of a government of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the federal level must address the issue of restructuring without delay. This is what the Yoruba people want and the APC now has the opportunity to publicly announce its stance on this crucial issue.
“It is not going to be sufficient to have a new government, which will be prepared to continue with the old ways of doing things. The Yoruba people contend that the recent election shift is certainly not just about elections.

“We suspect that the postponement is about something more sinister, the first being that it might be grounds to prepare a soft surface for a sympathetic group within the armed forces to take over the reins of power, since in character and content, there is little to distinguish the present rudderless government from the one that ruled in the Second Republic between 1979 and 1983,” the communique stated.

With the President effectively forcing the postponement of an election he was on course to lose, it is difficult to see how some sections of the voting population will accept any form Jonathan 'victory.'

The postponement seriously damaged Mr Jonathan's credibility with the international community. He's seriously wounded right now.

If there is substantial post-election trouble, that community will simply tell the President to leave. By the time the US, UN, AU, EU etc tell him to go, he's as good as gone.

Whatever you think, the US remains the most powerful/important/influential country on earth.

Let's watch.

I have come to realise that Afenifere is made up of wise elders but the Yoruba youth on Nairaland are portraying the Yoruba as back-stabbers.

Anyways, whatever Afenifere says overrides what the Yoruba cretins do on Nairaland no matter how loud they shout. cool

There are 2 Afeniferes. There is one made of mainly old Yoruba politicians - Olu Falae etc who essentially support Jonathan/PDP.

And then there is Afenifere Renewal Group which gives the appearance of independence but is probably inclined towards APC.

Loser! You are a learner grin grin grin You don't understand international political chess game. Where was the US & UN when Abiola was given that special tea by buhari's brothers? Where was US & UN when Rwanda was on fire?

Keep deceiving yourself, the Americans have no time for you, the sooner you realise that, the better for you.

Meanwhile GEJ is making some good deals with key Americans. Jonathan will win the elections and any uprising will be quelled and severly dealt with. We are watching. cheesy cheesy

Lord, give us our own Mandela this time around. A compassionate leader who can mentor and motivate us to love ourselves and our nation and help us see the benefits and purpose of our living together as a people bound by natural and national aspirations for excellence.
It's almost a settled fact that the legacy of this government is threat of war and seccesion by the ethnic groups in the country.
If it's not religious difference crisis today, tomorrow it's difference in tribe and tongue.
This country needs serious healing and prayers.

Good development!

I noticed where it says meeting was held in Ibadan. Yoruba leaders came together in the heart of their homeland to deliberate their future in Nigeria.

I cannot remember Ibo leader ever doing same in Enugu. If they did not meet in Abuja, they are meeting in Lagos, or Kano, to discuss Ibo political future.

Ibo leaders should follow the lead of others and demonstrate love and pride in their homeland.

A truly Federal system is what is needed - I don't care who the President is.

The Federal government needs to be weakened, the amount that they extract from the states' resources should be slashed.

Those states that cannot survive without suckling from the Federal teat should be made to amalgamate.
