According to Dr Subramania Iyer, Professor and Head of the Plastic Surgery Department at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in the south-western city of Cochi, the surgery lasted for 16 hours and involved up to 20 surgeons Manu lost both of his hands in a train accident. He is the first in India to receive a double hand transplant. The hands used for the transplant came from a victim of a traffic accident.
