THE Federal Government restated on Thursday that it would check the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East and secure the area for the forthcoming general elections. Coordinator, National Information Centre, Mr Mike Omeri, gave the assurance on Thursday while giving update on the security situation in the North-East. Omeri, who disclosed that available intelligence indicated that recruits of the sect were moving into training camps in Borno, urged the people to be vigilant. He said the recruits were moving from ``such locations as Geidam, Mairi and Dupcha (all in Borno) to training camps within the general area.’’ The co-ordinator recalled that the sect had referred to the movement recently and boasted that it had between 30,000 and 50,000 strong force to disrupt the forthcoming elections in Maiduguri. ``Previous major attacks by insurgents, including the siege on Bama and Monguno military bases were preceded by such massing up of fighters in training camps within the proposed targets,’’ he said. Omeri, however, assured that the military had fully mobilised and deployed against the insurgents and were chasing them in order to roundly subdue them. ``We urge the public to exercise a high level of vigilance and support the military to ensure hitch-free elections and a return to normalcy in the general area, soonest. ``We also seize this opportunity to restate government’s commitment to keeping the country and its citizens safe from those who seek to destroy the nation,’’ he said. Omeri called on the civil society organisations and politicians to refrain from ``disruptive and inciting statements’’.
