Jonathan’s Incompetence And Exploitation Of Religious Lines by Nobody: 11:55pm On Feb 26, 2015
My email and twitter have been overwhelmed by Nigerians and others, who were frustrated and dismayed over the postponement of the Nigerian general election for six weeks by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Professor Attahiru Jega, chairman of INEC adduced the reason for the postponement as lack of security guarantee given to his commission by President Jonathan’s Military Chiefs. He re-iterated that although his commission was ready to conduct the election but the Military Chiefs and the National Security Adviser had asked for six weeks postponement, to enable them defeat Boko Haram in the four North Eastern States of Borno, Yobe, Gombe and Adamawa.

Most of the people that contacted me are apolitical. But they were perplexed about INEC reason for postponing the election, only six days before it was due to take place. What is more, they were just as perturbed by President Jonathan apparent politicisation of our Military Forces. Whereas the Police and the Department of State Security (DSS) have firmly nailed their colours on to the PDP Masthead, President Jonathan’s attempt to gradually involve our most cherished institution, the Military Forces in the electoral process, particularly in a manner that was never contemplated by our nation’s constitution, is very troubling.

I undoubtedly concur with the concern averred by many that President Jonathan should desist from involving the Military in his insidious desire to cling on to power. As citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, our primary loyalty must be to our nation and not to any political party. I would therefore plead with you not to waver in your support for our Military Forces. Because, despite the motive of President Jonathan, I still have the highest respect for our Military. Our men and women in uniforms put their lives on the line every day, to ensure our protection and defending our nation territorial boundaries. Your unwavering support for our Military Forces is even more critical in this unusual time when part of our nation territory is under Islamic Caliphate, controlled by Boko Haram.

It is worth noting that in the 1980’s our nation was faced with similar insurgents known as the Maitatsine. General Buhari as the then Head of State and Commander in Chief of our Armed Forces did not dither over the Maitatsine crisis. He led from the front and also visited the trouble spots. He was focused on developing effective and determined response to exterminate the Maitatsine terrorists from our nation soil. General Buhari did not have time to look around for whom to blame for the emergence of the Maitatsine group. He took decisive and bold offensive action against Maitatsine, and he even flew into Adamawa to oversee how the military offensive action was carried out. In fact, it was the last time our nation heard of the Maitatsine group. This was a classic demonstration of decisive and bold leadership with perceptive strategic insight on national security, competent and effective management and zero tolerance for corruption.

It is therefore incomprehensible that a dithering President Jonathan, who admitted to have been fighting Boko Haram with Kids gloves for the last six years, has now turned around with a promise to defeat Boko Haram within six weeks.Given that professor Jega’s INEC did not ask for the postponement of the election, what then is the real reason behind the security card now in play? Well, the reason can be deciphered from the campaign momentum that has been coalescing behind the candidature of General Buhari and the APC. The PDP envisages that the postponement of the election will buy them time, to demonise the highly respected General Buhari, whose integrity is impeccable with great candour and beyond reproach. During this period, the PDP will use the nation resources to saturate the television and print media with lies and imaginary military successes over Boko Haram, as well as daily commissioning of various white elephant projects such as electricity, road networks, water plants etc.

The PDP have gone further to paint General Buhari as a religion extremist, whose intention is to turn our nation into Islamic Caliphate. Indeed, nothing can be further from the truth. Nigeria is a secular nation with emerging democratic structures. No President or political party can unilaterally turn our nation into a Caliphate without the approval of the National Assembly. Further, any President or political party that use their whim and caprice to turn our nation into a Caliphate will only succeed in setting the nation ablaze. General Buhari has of course said it repeatedly that, religion is not the duty of government and this is also the position of the APC. The PDP’s relentless effort to exploit our religion and tribal fault lines for their narrow party interest will of course draw a blank.

A group of PDP supporters from the Niger Delta have threatened mayhem and cutting off the nation’s oil supply pipelines if President Jonathan, a son of the Niger Delta loses the election. I strongly beg to differ. Our party, the APC draws enormous support from the length and breadth of the nation including the Niger Delta. The notion that because our elders such as Edwin Clark and others who happens to be members of the PDP are better campaigners of the needs of the people of the Niger Delta is a false premise and does not hold water. I am a proud son of the Niger Delta and so is Honourable Sokonte Davies, Senator Magnus Abe, Honourable Dakuku Peterside and Governor Amaechi to mention but a few. And we are passionate advocates of the needs of the people of the Niger Delta. To my way of thinking therefore, if President Jonathan will allow free, fair and credible election to take place on the revised dates of 28th March and 11th April, General Buhari and the APC will easily emerge victorious, drawing strong support from the entire geo-political zones. Ultimately, our nation will be the winner, because we will experience security, societal, economic and political equanimity.

Extrapolating from the revelation by Sahara Reporters on 5th February 2015, of the alleged super rigging by the PDP of the Ekiti State Governorship election in 2014, which brought the shameless Ayo Fayose into office, the possibility of the PDP using the police and the military to repeat similar fraud in the coming election particularly, in APC strongholds and leaning states is very real and cannot be discounted. My submission therefore is for us to stand firm, be unruffled and be extremely vigilant. For example, our campaign rallies have been attacked and boomed at least three times in Okirika, Rivers State (the home town of the first lady), by anti-democratic elements, who may have acted on the instruction of some political entrepreneurs. The most recent attack resulted in loss of life of a police officer, stabbing of Charles Eruka (Channels TV correspondent) as well as injuries to our party supporters. The impression that the Rivers State Police Command and Department of State Security did not have any inkling about the perpetrators of this heinous crime is preposterous and laughable. I urge the Rivers State Commissioner of Police and the DSS to quickly raise their heads above the parapet and bring the real perpetrators of this monstrous crime and their political sponsors to face the full force of the law.

The Premium Times on 12th February 2015 quoted the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Joseph Imbu as saying ‘’if one of my men is killed, I shall kill 20 of them, but don’t shoot first’’. It is incredible that a senior Police Officer made such a repugnant statement and yet, neither President Jonathan nor the Inspector General of Police, bother to give immediate marching order to this man, who does not have any regard for the sanctity and value of human life. This is the same man, who as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, tried very hard to implement his brief from ASO Rock, to undermine Governor Rotimi Amaechi with a view to make the then Minister of Education, a de facto Governor. But fortunately, Governor Amaechi stood his ground and Mr Imbu and his political masters were soundly defeated. He is also the same Mr Imbu, who attempted to put a spoke in the wheel of the Bring Back Our Girls Campaign group (The Chibok Group) from having their daily meeting in Abuja, on the basis of spurious security report. By all account, it is quite obvious that Mr Imbu’s policing instincts are fundamentally incongruent with the operation of the rule of law. I suggest this man should be demoted and be re-deployed immediately to the North Eastern State of Borno war front, to confront Boko Haram, the chief custodians and master enforcers of the jungle law, which Mr Joseph Imbu cherished so much.

Given the endemic corruption that pervades his administration, President Jonathan attempted to use the Presidential media chart on Wednesday 11th February 2015 to illuminate his perceives difference between the acts of stealing and corruption. The President argued that what is referred to as corruption is really common stealing. On 5th May 2014, the President was accused of turning a blind eye to corruption among his ministers, but he responded by making similar bewildering argument. Commenting on the President conception of stealing and corruption, Professor Itse Sagay contended that there was no technical difference between the two acts. Professor Sagay argued that ‘’stealing is taking what belongs to another person without the consent of the owner with the intention of keeping it permanately. Corruption is using an office to acquire the resources of an organisation without working for it and without the organisation’s awareness. Ultimately, every act of corruption is an act of stealing. There is no moral or ethical difference between them. Both are criminal, immoral and anti-social acts nobody should attempt to make one look higher than the other’’.

It is astonishing that the President of our nation refused to acknowledge the crippling nature of corruption on our nation infrastructural development. For example, because of corruption, about 75% of our nation is under electricity blackout, the road networks are largely un-motorable, safe drink water is beyond the reach of many, the best university in our nation is ranked about 32 in Africa and yet the President was more interested in making nuance difference between stealing and corruption. It goes without saying that the President will take no notice of the disambiguation of stealing and corruption as elucidated by Professor Sagay.

Under President Jonathan administration, ministerial impunity has risen to such an unprecedented level. A number of Ministers and Senior Public Servants including the Minister for Petroleum and the former Director of the Police Pension Fund have all consistently ignored invitations by committees of the National Assembly to appear before them. Some ministers have even gone to court, seeking determination that the relevant National Assembly committee do not have the power to invite them to appear before it without first, seeking and gaining approval from the President.

Section 67 (2) of the 1999 constitution states that ‘’A Minister of the Government of the Federation shall attend either House of the National Assembly if invited to explain to the House the conduct of his Ministry and in particular when the affairs of the Ministry are under discussion’’.
Section 89 (1) (C) of the 1999 constitution grants the Senate and House of Representative or their committees the right to ‘’summon any person in Nigeria to give evidence at any place or produce any document or other thing in his possession or under his control, and examine him as a witness and require him to produce any document or other thing in his possession under his control, subject to all just exceptions’’. Relaying on ‘’just exception’’ may be insufficient for public officers under investigation for misuse of public funds.

Although President Jonathan turn a blind eye to Ministerial and Senior Public Servants corruption, but his apparent failure to defend our nation constitution even when it is violated in such an arrogant manner by his Ministers and Public Servants is anathema and scathing indictment of this President. Our nation is patiently waiting for the election of General Buhari and APC government, to usher in a breath of fresh air and new direction of travel. We can’t wait.

4)You import Goods from abroad at #209 per
dollar instead of #159 per dollar yet you are a
Gejite.
