On my way to work over the weekend, (oh sorry I forgot to tell you I’m on internship) I mediated a discussion between the bus driver and the conductor. The topic was something I think too inappropriate to be discussed by 7am: Fornication.


Driver talked more, because he focused on the road, while Conductor attacked with strong points, because now and then he would yelling out the window for passengers.


“Look, I don tell you. Stop fornicating. Na sin you dey sin so. The bible says ‘Thou shall not fornicate’,” Driver said. The bus smelled of detergent.

“Bros, forget that thing joor,” Conductor replied. “After all, I dey ask God for forgiveness after.”

“Oh, na there you fail exam. So because God give you the opportunity (he actually said otunitily) to ask for forgiveness every time, you want to take it for grandtheft (granted).”

Conductor laughed.


“See, God know why him send Jesus to die. Is because Him know say we no go fit stop sin. Abi you no dey sin?”

“You don see me where I dey sin before?” Driver asked. He was laughing.

Conductor said: “All those money you dey give police for road no be bribe ni? Abi bribe no be corruption? Corruption no be sin?”

“Fornication na big sin oh. E big pass my own!”


The bus slowed to pick a man near UTC Bus Stop. The man had a big bible in his hand, the kind Mother says can drive the devil without even saying a word.

Perfect, I thought. If Driver couldn’t convince Conductor that fornication is a sin, then this man surely could. He sat with me in front. Driver, seeing the enormous bible said, “Oga, see this my conductor; him say fornication no be sin.”

“Whaaaaaaat?” Big Man Big Bible started. I held my laughter. He reminded me of the couple who always said ‘whaaaaaaat’ in Grown Ups 2.

“Fornication is a sin! A big sin!”

“How?” Conductor asked.

“Because the woman you are fornicating against (I think he meant ‘with’) is not your wife. When you get married then you can do whatever you want.” Big Man Big Bible didn’t stop there. He continued and even entered different other sins and their punishments. He even said AIDS was created by God to check fornication!!. You can imagine the secret look I gave him. After he finished, Conductor paused for a long time before finally replying with a question.

“Oga, I beg, Holy Spirit fit sin?”

“No! The Holy Spirit cannot sin.”

“Okay. We are saying the same thing. Holy Spirit and Mary do fornication na, if so; because Holy Spirit no marry Mary before them born Jesus. So therefore, fornication no be sin, because Holy Spirit no fit sin.”

I could not hold the laughter back anymore. I wanted to hear Big Man Big Bible’s reply, but I had gotten to Lagos Junction, my bus stop.



***Meanwhile, I’m interning at Radio Rivers 2, Port Harcourt town, where I sit in the live studio all day; watching, learning, participating. The only issue is that the Air Conditioner is too high in there, I almost freeze. If you can see this, Mr. Tammy, please reduce it by next week, or buy me new winter coats.***
