The Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Alhaji Abubakar Yar’adua was yesterday sacked by President Umaru Yar’adua and replaced with NNPC’s Group Executive Director (Special Project), Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo.

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr Rilwan Lukman, announced the Federal Government’s approval of Barkindo’s appointment via a statement in Abuja.

The statement issued by Dr. Levi Ajuonuma, Group General Manager of NNPC’s Public Affairs Division, said Barkindo’s appointment took effect from Monday, January 12.

Barkindo’s predecessor has proceeded on his pre-retirement leave.

Until his appointment, Barkindo, whose career in NNPC spanned more than 23 years, was Coordinator of Special Duties, overseeing the implementation of the corporation’s major projects.

He had been the Acting Secretary-General of OPEC in 2006 and the Deputy Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas.

Barkindo, who had been General Manager, and Head, International Trade, of the London Office of NNPC, was a Special Assistant to the Minister of Petroleum and Energy.

He has also served on the board of several NNPC companies, banks, oil service companies and international trading companies.

The new GMD served for 15 years on the OPEC Economic Commission Board as Nigeria’s Representative, and chaired the Board in 2006 as

Acting Secretary-General of OPEC.

The statement also conveyed the appointment of Prof. Yinka Omoregbe as Company Secretary/Legal Adviser of NNPC.

Until her new appointment, Omoregbe was Dean, Faculty of Law of the University of Ibadan.

Omoregbe replaces Chief Sena Anthony.

The former NNPC GMD, Yar’adua was appointed in acting capacity in August 2007 following the removal of his predecessor, Engineer Funso Kupolokun.

sack means to terminate employment. Whether acting or not, he could have been sacked.

How is trading today, hope the Naira is stabilishing.

The same wrong use of words caused confusion here some time ago when the caption of the story says: SERVICE CHIEFS SACKED, when in fact Paul Dike was not sacked, rather given a higher position of as CDS from CAS.

Xavier, I disagree. I don't think sack is the right word.

Guys,

Whether sacked or relocated or redeployed or whatever language may reflect whats going on there, i just hope the guy delivers. This i don't think is about 'bros-bros' kinda stuff. The guys has quite a resume reflecting sojourn in different positions, but i wonder whether he established a track record in those positions that makes him mature for the job at hand in the present dire economic situation and the strategic nature of the Agency he is to head.

Just wondering sha, about 23 yrs in NNPC, thesame corrupt, inefficient NNPC. I personally think that the salvation of that agency cannot come from an eroded within.

Muza, Jarus

The point is u could be sacked from a position and not from an organisation. There is nothing wrong with usage. Well maybe redeployed could have been a better word.
