One Million Man March: Apc’s Failed Attempt At Reviving Tinubu’s Dying Legacy by nnekaogo: 11:50am On Mar 12, 2015
When the All Progressives Congress announced a one million man march that was slated for March 7, which was last Saturday, it was a clear indication to political pundits that the move was an attempt to save the dying legacy of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, chieftain of the APC and other party stalwarts that have been under barrage from the public in recent times.
As expected, the one million man march hardly managed to get ten thousand supporters. It was estimated that the number of supporters that attended the event were barely over two thousand and eight hundred. This has dampened the morale of party members and is said to be the reason why it was not widely publicised despite the APC’s strength in the media. Investigations also revealed that many of those that participated in the Saturday event were bribed with amounts as much as N10,000 per person before the march started. Others who joined upon hearing the monetary gratification managed to get between N3,000 and N5,000 per person.
The failed one million man march, according to political experts and historians, is the final message that Tinubu’s legacy is on the decline as the Yoruba nation demonstrated on Saturday that it is not in support of his ideologies.
Recently, Bola Tinubu has been in the eye of the storm, largely due to financial fraud he committed while he held sway as the governor of the state and even after leaving office through Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola.
Allegations are rife that the erstwhile governor converted several state properties into personal use and diverted funds for public projects into purchase of choice estates within and outside Lagos.
Some of the properties registered in Tinubu’s name in Lagos include: Oriental Hotel, Falomo Shopping Complex, First Nation Airline, Lekki Concession Company, Apapa Amusement Park, Maiyegun Land Project, Renaissance Hotel, Ikeja Shopping Mall, TV Continental, Converted Lagos Polytechnic land for TVC, Radio Continental, Tax Collector of Lagos State (through Alpha Beta).
Tinubu is also reputed for his nepotism, favouring his immediate family members for public offices. His wife and son-in-law are members of the National Assembly, while his daughter is the president-general of market women in Lagos. Two of his nephews were also given tickets to Lagos State House of Assembly.
