This is a neural tube defect (an emcee halls) possibly caused by environmental toxins and low intake of folic acid by the mother during pregnancy.

Thank you for that clarification...

I should add here some of the other risk factors for neural tube defects (NTDs), of which anencephaly is one:

*alcoholism

*obesity

*Poorly controlled diabetes

*Use of certain anti-epileptic medications eg Tegretol (carbamazepaine)

*Recent research has also found high temperature (eg fever) during the early weeks of pregnancy to be a risk factor. (Thus saunas or excessively hot baths should be avoided.)

Women particularly those with a history of NTDs should take note.

Lack of folate also gave that thing biceps? Did you see the muscles on its arms?
I get it that insufficient vitamins could lead to NTD but this picture is work of art! That thing can't be a new born baby with thaht size! No matter the zoom!

anencephaly...i saw a case as a house officer in st. nicholas in 2010. You can prevent it by folic acid use in preconception/ early pregnancy

This is a congenital disorder known as anencephaly characterised by lack of cranial vault and frog-like eyes. It should have been discovered around 13 weeks of pregnancy with ultrasound and the situation could have been averted. It is not compatible with life.

thank you for this. The awareness on neural tube defects are quite low in Nigeria. People tend to attach it a spiritual meaning. It's just scientific. I guess the mother has a low MTHFR gene. She needs to check her gene mutation.
