2015 Election: Nigeria Faces A Choice, And Obama And America Are Stumped
FacebookTwitter Share Email
By Andrew Peek, Fox News

Nigerian presidential elections are not usually a pressing concern of the United States. Though Nigeria is a major oil producer and the most populous country in Africa, the U.S. is usually fixated on more imminent disasters elsewhere in the world – like the Middle East, for example, and ISIS. But its elections on Saturday, March 28th are different, since Nigeria’s local Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram has declared allegiance to the Islamic State. After Iraq, after Syria, after Yemen, the U.S. seems intent on supporting a president who will stop the country from slipping into chaos, but it has no idea whom to root for.

By all accounts, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign against Boko Haram has not been an unqualified success. His troops have often been outgunned, despite an almost $6 billion security budget. They have committed human rights abuses, including scores of well-documented extrajudicial killings, and prisoners who seem uncommonly likely to die in military custody. And his government overall is beset by corruption, with nine out ten citizens believing their government is “extremely corrupt,” according to Transparency International. Overall, the situation is what the 9/11 generation of Americans would call a “quagmire.” We know them well.

And that’s too bad, because like ISIS, Boko Haram is horrid. It murders students in their beds, conducts bombings against civilians, and cuts off the heads of truck drivers with chainsaws. The abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in April 2014 was the first outrage that brought significant Western attention to the deepening crisis in Nigeria, and prompted President Obama to send limited military assistance to the Jonathan government, as well as the Twitter hashtag #BringBackOurGirls. In any case the girls have not yet come back, and the assistance has not really seemed to work.

So if the Jonathan administration is hopelessly corrupt and ineffective, why should the U.S. root for it on Saturday? Well, because in true counterterrorism damned-if-you-do fashion, the alternative – General Muhammedu Buhari – might be worse.

Buhari is seen as offering a firmer hand against Boko Haram, as well as tolerating less corruption domestically. Unfortunately, he’s also called for Sharia law across Nigeria, which would probably achieve mixed results in the majority-Christian south. It’s unclear how sympathetic he is to the niceties of what we might call “basic electoral democracy,” since his last stretch in public office was after a successful military coup in 1983. This is his fourth legal run for president of Nigeria, and he is reportedly being advised by the consulting firm of Obama’s election guru David Axelrod.

You saw David Axelrod there with APC, yet you think Washington supports the clueless weasel and his fedora hat - hysterical.

If you don't know who Axelrod is - google is ya friend. Even John McCain the cyborg doesn't like GEJ's face. They all want him out.

Who is McCain in the decision making in America. By the way, if he doesnt like GEJ is it the type of regime that has dealt with America in the time past and present that he will like? I am an expert in international politics and will tell you that America can never support Buhari. If you read between the lines of the posted article, you will know that its a dilemma for Washington which finally resolved the dilemma in favour of GEJ.

Do GMB a favour. You people that like him should get some medics around him in this crucial moment considering his age. He will be so disappointing especially in this era of obscure propaganda in politicking that shields reality.

Please do this elderly malam a favour, if you love him.

Despite my political leanings, I do not care for this news. Mr. Oyinbo and your poke-nose, stay out of our business!!

And for those of you confused about the allegiance of FOX News, they are tied and bound to the Republicans whom are sworn enemies to the Obama and his Democrats. You prove nothing by stating Obama's house boy is the brains behind APC's propaganda machine.

I know my words are strong, but anything those yanks touch turns to rubbish. Just ask Ghaddafi...

The United States has long been painfully aware of serial election loser Buhari's criminal rap sheet that notably includes incitement to murder, in the wake of Buhari's 2011 election defeat, when scores of university graduates drafted by the government to supervise elections were set upon and slaughtered at the hands of baying northern Nigerian street mobs inspired by Bhuari's public threats that "blood would flow" in vengeance against the Nigerian public, whenever his INEVITABLE election loss became official.

US intelligence is also cognizant of Buhari's antecedents as a rogue military coup organizer, who truncated the tenure of an elected government in 1983, and then subjected Nigeria to one of her most harrowing periods of sadistic and arbitrary terror witnessed till date, when thousands were arrested by the dreaded secret police, and herded into subterranean cells where scores died from torture, starvation and medical neglect.

With the growing threat posed by fundamentalist death-cults operating in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, Nigeria, Chad and the Cameroons, the US data files also document Buhari's much-publicized comments essentially swearing allegiance to an over-arching, long-term political agenda that seeks to subjugate the entirety of Nigeria's disparate tribes, religions and unifying secular legal system under the 17th-Century theocratic dictates of Sharia Law in its most barbaric mutation, as practiced by the the terror groups ISIS and Boko Haram currently.

Buhari's often trumpeted claim to be a moralostic crusader and vanquisher of corruption are also regarded with some amusement by observers both within and outside Africa, given the key role played by Buhari, during the brutal and oppressive reign of military tyrant Sanni Abacha, arguably Nigeria's most accomplished embezzler of state funds, when Buhari was entrusted with the proceeds of international crude oil exports, in a climate of criminal impunity and non-existent fiscal oversight.

Finally, it does not take a political scientist to interpret the gloating, mocking tone in Buhari's every press release that follows bloody attacks perpetrated against civilians by the Boko Haram terror group, especially when viewed in the context of Buhari's bitter protests every time the Nigerian military scores victories against the terrorists in the ongoing Sambisa war. In short, Buhari is not just a sympathizer, but also a supporter and financier of the Boko Haram terror group, which he HOPES will create sufficient panic in the populace, that they would be blackmailed into voting Buhari into office as the born-to-rule RULER of his dreams, just so he can finally call off the attacks by his Boko Haram terror gang, as a "benevolent" reward to the voting public for once again giving Buhari free and liberal access to government treasuries.

Diplomatic protocol prohibits Washington from openly expressing official support for incumbent Nigerian President Jonathan Goodluck, but you can bet your bottom dollar that behind the scenes, Uncle Sam's strategic preference calls for Jonathan to REMAIN in office until the year 2019, by which time a more stringent candidate selection process in Nigerian politics will foreclose the chances of illiterate, senile and bloodthirsty individuals such as Buhari from ever contemplating the notion of applying to run for elected office.

The problem with this article is that it accords too much credence to a statement by Buhari that sharia law should be imposed throughtout the country. In reality, extending sharia law country-wide is impraticable.

See trouble o shocked shocked shocked

Here was I thinking PDP and sons plus daughters have been trying very hard to make us believe Obama and the USA are the brains behind boko haram?

Now they want us to believe Obama and the USA are afraid of GMB because of sharia?

Why should boko haram promoters(Obama and the USA) be scared of sharia?

PDP go to great lengths to confuse themselves that you just must pity them.

Buhari has generated an impressive historical record of fanatical and violent conduct which establishes the basic, inherent traits of his true character, so his publicly expressed ambition to conquer the whole of Nigeria for subjugation under extremist rule, as utterly irrational and demented as it may appear to a sane observer, remains a cherished dream very close to the evil heart of Boko Haram terror gang leader Buhari, even while he seeks to impose himself by hook or by crook as a selected RULER and overlord mounting a subdued nation of Nigeria like a rabid hyena in heat.
