Who is Nigeria's President-elect? Mr Buhari, who's
seventy-two, was defeated in his previous three
attempts to win the presidency.
This time he stood as the candidate of several
opposition parties who came together to campaign
on a platform of tackling corruption and defeating
the Islamist militants of Boko Haram. A Muslim
general from northern Nigeria, he seized power in
a coup in nineteen-eighty-three.
His time in office was marked by the stifling of
dissent and what became known as a war against
indiscipline. He was himself ousted by a coup and
spent more than three years in prison.
