•Protesters, security men block roads

•Banks, offices closed

The plan by the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers in the Ekiti State House of Assembly to begin the process of impeachment of the state governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, created a near total lockdown of the state, with protests and security presence crippling activities around the state.

On Tuesday morning, soldiers were on stop and search at the Post Office area of Ikere-Ekiti, while they also retained their presence in Itawure, in Efon Local Government Area, as well as the entry point to Ekiti State from Ikere.

There was also a roadblock mounted by protesters in Igede-Ekiti, while in Oye-Ekiti, the road leading to Ayede, Isan, Oloje and other communities and Kwara State, was also blocked by the protesters, who refused to clear the barricade when journalists requested that they do so.

Vehicles of travellers outside the state were gathering at the Oye roadblock while the angry youths made threats and asked every vehicle to depart.

Meanwhile, in Ado Ekiti, protest marches by different categories of people were witnessed with the protesters chanting against the APC lawmakers in the state.

The state House of Assembly complex remained locked with no activity, except for the heavy security presence provided by policemen and men of the Department of State Security.

Unconfirmed sources told the Nigerian Tribune at the House of Assembly road that some armed political thugs had a confrontation with the security operatives and that some of them were overpowered by the security agents and arrested.

A blue Toyota Hilux van with registration number AA 363 YEK, which had been driven into a ditch, and a demobilised Volkswagen Audi salon car, both at the CBN/Secretariat Road, the sources alleged, were vehicles allegedly brought by the thugs.

Aside Ado Ekiti, protests were also held in major towns like Efon Alaaye, Iworoko, Aisegba, Ikere, Ise, Ogotun Igbemo, against the attempt to boot Fayose out of office, thereby preventing human and vehicular movements for several hours, as all major roads leading to Ekiti were blocked.

Some SSS 3 students sitting for their school certificate examinations by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) outside the capital city could not get vehicles to convey them at the park.

Banks and other commercial concerns in the state were closed and businesses in various parts of the state remained paralysed.

In a related development, the state Head of Service, Dr Gbenga Faseluka and workers in the state, under the auspices of Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), besieged the assembly in protest and warned the lawmakers against plunging the state into violence.

The organised labour, in another statement signed by NLC secretary, Mr Ade Obatoye; TUC secretary, Mr Joseph Adebayo and the JNC secretary, Mr Oladele Ayodeji, enjoined the entire Ekiti workforce to see the present development as “a way of fomenting trouble in the state.”

Also, the people of Igbemo Ekiti, led by Chief Agamago Adetunji, had, during a solidarity visit to the governor, said “we are solidly behind you. Ekiti people elected you to be their leader and no power under the earth can remove you.

“We are praying for you and assuring you that you will win all the 26 assembly seats during Saturday’s polls.”

The deputy governor, Dr Kolapo Olusola, who responded on behalf of the governor, likened the APC lawmakers to the biblical war of Egypt against the people of Israel, while he expressed confidence that the governor would triumph over his enemies.

“This Egyptian war led by APC will be defeated. Governor Fayose did not elect himself, but you put him there. This is just a passage and it will go by the grace of God.

“I want to assure you that we will see no more of this war against an anointed man in few days’ time,” the deputy governor boasted.

he said.

Fayose can’t escape impeachment —Lawmakers

As the crisis between Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State and the 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers festers, the latter, on Tuesday, in Osogbo, Osun State, said no amount of intimidation and threat from the governor can stop his impending impeachment by the legislature.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday evening in Osogbo, Osun State capital, the majority leader of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Honourable Churchill Adedipe ,said the legislature would pursue the impeachment of the governor to a logical conclusion.

Adedipe, who was flanked by the Speaker of the assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin and other members of G-19 lawmakers, lamented that their move to gain entry into Ekiti on Tuesday was thwarted by military personnel, who, he alleged, took order from the Brigade Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, General Aliyu Momoh.

According to him, the speaker, Dr Ominrin and other APC lawmakers had already fixed their sitting for Tuesday to continue investigation into allegations of constitutional breaches levelled against Governor Fayose.

Adedipe explained that the vehicle conveying the lawmakers was, however, prevented from entering Ekiti at Itawure, a town about 40 minutes drive to Ado Ekiti, by heavily armed soldiers.

He lamented that “for over two hours, the soldiers prevented us from proceeding to Ado Ekiti,” adding that information reaching some of them from Ado Ekiti indicated that the premises of the assembly had been flooded with thugs.

Adedipe added that “before we decided to move to Ado Ekiti, we wrote a letter to the Commissioner of Police that we were coming to Ado. The treatment meted to us today was actually uncalled for. It is absurd.

“We the 19 lawmakers are saying that you can only delay the cause of justice, you cannot run away from it.

“We are going to ensure the logical conclusion of what we have started. We are calling on Nigerians and Ekiti people to support us and save us from undue attack from Fayose. We would not be deterred.”

Call APC members in Ekiti to order, Adeyeye tells Buhari

MINISTER of State for Works, Mr Dayo Adeyeye, has called on the president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, to call All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Ekiti State to order, before they truncate democracy in the country.

The minister, who described the APC desperation to seize power in Ekiti State through the backdoor as a dangerous trend, added that the APC members in the Ekiti State House of Assembly were capitalising on Buhari’s victory to cause crisis in the state.

He said the APC should stop behaving like party of bad losers.

“In 1999, Professor Tunde Adeniran of the PDP lost to

Chief Niyi Adebayo, Adeniran congratulated the winner. He did not go to court.

“It was in 2003 that Adebayo lost to Governor Ayodele Fayose that they went to the tribunal.

“Also, when Chief Segun Oni won election in 2007, these same APC people made Ekiti ungovernable for him.

“In 2011 when Fayose contested senatorial election and lost to Senator Babafemi Ojudu, he did not go to court. None of the PDP National Assembly candidates that lost in 2011 went to court.

“Since they lost the governorship to the PDP nine months ago, they have refused to accept defeat. It was as a result of this desperation to steal Ekiti people’s mandate that Chief Omolafe Aderiye was killed.

“Today again, they killed Modupe Olaya in Efon-Alaaye and one wonders why these APC people derive joy in shedding blood of innocent Ekiti sons and daughters.

“Why must there be crisis in Ekiti each time the APC elements lose power to the PDP?

“General Buhari must not let these desperate APC members in Ekiti State drag his name and reputation in the mud by using his name to cause chaos,” he said.

Security men take over routes to Ekiti secretariat, assembly

ARMED security men, on Tuesday, barricaded all roads leading to the Ekiti State secretariat, the building that houses the state House of Assembly.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that civil servants could not get to their offices as they were turned back by the security men.

The workers returned home as they could not confront the combined force of armed policemen and personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The secretariat complex was blocked by armoured tank and other security patrol vehicles.

An Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Funsho Adegboye, led a team of security men that took over the secretariat and the House of Assembly complex.

Adegboye advised a group of protesters that converged at the legislative building to return home until peace returned to the state.

He told the labour leaders to caution their members so that the purported peaceful protest would not be hijacked by miscreants.

The Assistant Secretary-General of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr Femi Adebo, said members of the union were only out to stage a peaceful protest in support of the present administration.

“Governor Fayose assumed office less than six months ago and we, the civil servants in the state, have not seen anything wrong that could warrant his impeachment.

“Our peaceful protest this morning is to tell the whole world that all those rumours against Fayose are not true.

“The politicians must not incite the state civil servants against the government, they must allow peace to reign in Ekiti,” Adebo said.

The State Head of Service, Dr Gbenga Faseluka, had, before the rally, urged them to ensure that the protest was peaceful.

Can this undiscerning law makers leave this impeachment plans till after the gubernatorial elections. This is not good for APC in other states especially Lagos. This confirms that APC is a troublesome party and are power drunk at the moment. The victory at the last election is still intoxicating them and think they can get power easily from a confirmed thug like Fayose.

Where was the minister when 7 was greater than 19? Fayose bit more than he could chew thinking it was all about god father forever. They are only trying to help him to run away instead of braking away Ekiti from Nigeria like he earlier threatened.

Let the law take its course. If the lawmakers have all the clear and vetted evidence against the governor, they should go ahead with the impeachment process.
Why are the Ekitians afraid?
Why are PDPians scared?
Last time I checked, Nigeria is still a lawful democratic country.

I said it that APC will soon become the nemesis of the people. APC is becoming anti democratic. So because fayose did not support buhari then he must be removed by all means. If GEJ had laid siege on rivers state simply because amaechi didn't support him amaechi won't be running mouth. They won in osun no problem but ekiti must be destroyed just because they lost and they are not even in power yet. APC will start destroying itself from ekiti. By the time they do this in about three states and lay siege on newspaper and media houses that criticise buhari then we will start thinking about the change. When fayose was impeached with 7 members of the house by obasanjo was it democratic. APC want to make the state ungovernable for him the way they did to jonathan but ekiti and fayose are stubborn people. You have no right to determine who will rule us. Obasanjo succeeded cos they were in the same party but with APC trying to steal power through the back door, they will start their disgrace from ekiti.

Would you rather 7 is seen as greater than 19? Fayose called for this when he influenced the ouster of the APC speaker of the house?

Fayose aside the fact that he has behaved as a thug ( thuggery is in his family, Femi is elder brother who lives/used to live in Akute Lagos is a 419, thug and a chronic liar, I know him personally), the tape released a while ago is enough to have him impeached.

I just hope APC knows the importance of having the majority in the house on Saturday still if not, if Fayose succeeds in his delay tactics, and PDP wins the house of rep elections this weekend, the whole impeachment thing would have been defeated.

PDP fans are never realistic. Someone ousted the speaker of the house using 7 lawmakers against 19 when the law clearly stated only 2/3 of the house can impeach anyone and you are there spewing rubbish.

Some of you simply do not have conscience and unreasonable.

so why didn't APC do something about it since all these while. Why can't you wait till the court case instituted by you guys. Unlike you , I am not from PDP or APC but I am from ekiti and I know what peace you guys are going distrupt by trying to forcefully impeach fayose. So, it was right that APC lawmakers refused to pass budget, refused to approve commissioners just to make it impossible for him to rule. What he did was a last resort. Was it fayose that impeached them or their fellow lawmakers. So the lawmakers should focus on their seven colleagues. Even if what fayose did was wrong, why not wait till you win majority in the house in just three days times and then impeach him . so you know it is impossibile for APC to win house majority so they must impeach him and thwart the will of the people. APC will self destruct itself if they don't tolerate opposition. Leave fayose alone. Let his people decide his fate at the polls this weekend by either giving his Govt a majority APC house or PDP..
