APC Accuses Police DPO Of Arresting Over 100 Voters After Accreditation by vickylala239: 3:38pm On Apr 11, 2015
The Osun state chapter of the All Progressives Congress has accused the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Divisional Police Station, Ipetumodu, Ife North Local Government of the state, of ordering the arrest and detention of over 100 voters.
The APC claimed those detained were being held for alleged wandering.
The party said the detainees were voters known for having sympathy for the APC. PREMIUM TIMES is unable to independently verify that claim.
“The arrested voters had left their polling stations after being accredited by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ipetumodu,” the APC said.
The party claimed that it contacted the DPO by telephone and quoted him as saying “the voters were arrested for wandering and would be detained until the end of voting exercise insisting that his action was in compliance with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP)”.
The DPO and the Osun state command of the police could not be reached for comments at this time.
The Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, had threatened that voters who stayed behind at polling units after voting could be arrested for loitering.
But no one envisaged that accredited voters, waiting to cast their votes, could be arrested for loitering.
The Independent National Electoral Commission and the political parties have insisted that voters have a right to stay behind after voting to watch their votes counted, and results declared.
