"Igbo's Didn't make Lagos, Lagos Made the Igbo's".~By Akin Ajayi Obe. -Most Igbos say they are the people that developed Lagos and made Lagos what it is today. They say without Igbos, Lagos is finished. And I keep wondering how have Igbos helped in shaping and developing Lagos? “Lets get the fact right, Igbos didn't develop Lagos rather, it is Lagos that shaped and made the Igbos what they are today. Without Igbos in Lagos, Lagos will remain Lagos and without Lagos, most Igbos may likely be nothing. “Reason for my assertion is that most giant and top companies that attract millions of people across the country to Lagos are not owned by the Igbos so, how have Igbos shaped and developed Lagos? “These are the achievements and economic advancement Igbos gave Lagos and Lagosians; Tokunbo and Fake Spare Parts at Ladipo Market, China Electronics and Pirated CDs at Alaba Market, Bend-Down and Select Clothes at Idumota, Yaba and Kotangowa Markets, Chinese and Tokunbo Computer/Phones and Accessories at Computer Village Ikeja are Igbos economical achievements and contributions to Lagos. In fact, most Igbos are causing nuisances in Lagos. A visit to these markets will tell you the amount of nuisances that Most Igbos have caused in Lagos. The environments these Igbo traders are mostly populated are always polluted with waste of all sorts, they are dirty, stinking, rough, erect illegal shops on the roads, on pipeline and railway lines indiscriminately in these market places that cause traffic gridlocks and other dangerous situations and when Lagos State Government dismantles these illegal shops, they get angry. If Lagos State Government closes their shops for environmental violations, they pick offence. How then have the Igbos developed Lagos?.... think on these...... “As far as I am concerned, PZ, COCA-COLA, 7UP, CADBURY, MTN, ZAIN, GLO, ETISALAT, DANGOTE, SHOP-RITE, GOLDEN PENNY, FLOUR MILL, INDOMIE, UNILEVER, P&G, CHI LIMITED, GUINNESS, NIGERIA BREWERIES, OANDO, CONOIL, TOTAL, MOBIL, CHEVRON, SHELL, KFC, AQUADANA, EKO HOTEL, INTER CONTINENTAL HOTEL, PROTEA HOTEL, JULIUS BERGER, RCC CONSTRUCTION, NESTLE, KPMG, GSK, FRIESLAND FOODS, WAMCO, BRITISH AMERICA TOBACCO, SCHLUMBEGER, AIT, SILVERBIRD TV, CHANNELS TV, LARFARGE, etc are not owned by the Igbos. These companies are what attracted millions of people to Lagos. “Igbos shouldn't lay claim that they developed a place by becoming nuisances. Most of the top Churches in Lagos are not also owned by Igbos. House on the Rock, Redeemed Christian Church of Christ, Christ Embassy, Deeper Life, Living Faith, MFM, etc are not owned by Igbos. The only Church that's reasonably big and is owned by an Igbo man is TREM, while another Igbo Church, Lord Chosen Church, encourages nuisance in Lagos and it also doubles as the dirtiest Church in Lagos. “Records show that 75% of robbery cases in Lagos are carried out by Igbos, 85% of ritual cases in Lagos are carried out by Igbos, 60% of drug cases in Lagos are carried out by Igbos, 70% of fraud cases in Lagos are carried out by Igbos, 90% of pirated CD cases in Lagos are carried out by Igbos, 60% of fake and adulterated drugs in Lagos that have killed thousands of Lagosians are carried out by Igbos, in fact, most of the crimes in Lagos are connected to the Igbos, so how have the Igbos developed Lagos when they can't get their hands off crime? “There's no Igbo man among the top three richest people in Nigeria, so how are they successful? “The truth is that Igbos should be grateful that the Yorubas accommodated them in Lagos peacefully, they shouldn't take the meekness and kindness of the Yorubas for granted. “Igbos didn't make Lagos but it is actually Lagos that made Igbos.” End of discussion! ...... 17 Likes |

In as much this article is filled with hatred which I don't support the igbos should know that they didn't made Lagos. Lagos has been the centre land of trading even before the colonies came, that's why it is called "Eko". Igbos should stop beating around that without them Lagos is finish, Lagos has been Lagos before they came and trading has been the major thing in Lagos before they immigrated. 11 Likes |

I need to document this article, they are bitter truth which can't be go against. I like igbo people so much but one thing is common among them, do you know it? It's called ''greediness''. If it's possible to read every post that belongs to igbo people on nairaland as regards to the issue of ownership of lagos, you will always notice that trait of greediness in them. It's even an insult to be arguing about the true ownership of Lagos with Igbos, it's a big INSULT!!. How would one Emeka or Ifeyinwa leaves Anambra or Enugu in the eastern region and come to west and be dragging the ownership of Lagos with the yorubas, is that not an insult? You guys are visitors and nothing can change it. 7 Likes |

I think threads like this should not be promoted on Nairaland. Its emphasizes the things that divide us thatn those that unite us. The generation of people that profited from the division of Nigeria rather than her unity is fast going away. We owe it to one another to do better. By design (in error or by intent), we have been brought together as one. A forum like this is not the place to negotiate our terms of co-existence. My one kobo. 2 Likes |

FreeGlobe: My sister, Ogun state is another Lagos in the making. This is inevitable with hundreds of thousands of people coming into Lagos everyday. The masterplan is there for everyone to see. Ogun state have access to the sea, huge land for housing and agriculture, proximity to Lagos etc. What is causing the delay is politics. The project has been standstill since Jonathan came to power due to corruption and politics. This is the reason why APC fought tooth and nail with PDP over Lagos for continuity. So, in the next 10years, don't be surprised if you see people relocating to Ogun, 'the new Lagos'. 5 Likes |

If only our rail transportation system is functional. You can live in Lagos and work in Enugu or vice versa. But before then, please take my advice! Its good to move away from home to 'hammer' ( esp to Lagos bc of d ports and bc most companies' headquarters and recruitment agencies are situated there and bc it was formerly d country's capital) but wat stops u from developing ur father's land when you have enough to do so. WHY spend so much where u'l be expected to be grateful dat 'u were accomodated even after paying rent? Develop Aguata, Ihiala, Ekwusigo, Nnewi( already in progress to the glory of God) Onitsha etc. You may be wondering why am mentioning only places in Anambra, Go to the computer village, Alaba, Island, trade fair and festac to mention but a few, and find out d owners of those shops and tall plazas. 'I HATE ILLITERACY WITH PASSION' .NO PLACE ON the MAP OF NIGERIA IS CALLED' NO MAN'S LAND' anyone that refuses to follow examples will end up in shambles. History will continue to repeat itself if we continue to ignore it. Go to zik's home at Limca Road Onitsha and see the funny state of structures there. Those that did what ure doing today ( planning to do ) yesterday, where are they today? AKURUO ULO If u live and work in Lagos and have built a mansion or ure planning to build one, when your parents are still managing a 'no-fence' 2bed-room apartment without a toilet in ur village, SHAME ON YOU. Make Money! Oh Yes! But go home and develop your father's land. There is no place called ' no man's land' on the map of Nigeria. Its a pity that d Wisdom most of us claim to have ends in buying and selling (money making). 'AKURUO ULO' Most (if not all) of the great men of God from the west, business men, industrialists, academicians etc built one great structure, business, industry or just anything good in their home town, same can be said about the north. some built schools and are offering scholarships till today. Can we say the same about the Igbos? your answer is as good as mine. AKURUO ULO 3 Likes |

Igbos didn't make lagos kinda sound reasonable. but why hasn't lagos made the yorubas or hausas as it had made the igbos? ....any answer? The fact remains the igbos have achieved so much for themselves. They might not have made Lagos . Nigeria made lagos and by extension provided the ground for the igbos...but wait there...why are othet tribes not making use of this same ground as the igbos have?...so what are we saying The truth is the achievement of the igbos can only be attributed only to them. They may not have made lagos, but they are currently making it...lekki, vgc, amuwo odofin, ...etc there are areas the make up over 85% of the residents. 8 Likes 1 Share |

tinkinjow: This is where a simple class in statistics will give you a short answers. The ibo people have higher averages, because they come in high numbers - remember the 80:20 rule. Much of the success the easterner boast of comes from a small group of people - the others a struggling like every other Nigerian. And you tend to see more ibo people trading because this is their major business area, due to the apprenticeship practice in Nigeria. So if you are an importer and train 5 guys. Hopefully 1 will be quite successful , same for other business like electronics and spare parts and other retail business. I think the ibo people need to concentrate on the future of business in Lagos and not the politics in Lagos. Things are changing and the way business is done will change. Taxation will obviously grow, and these are areas the easterners should be rallying for , lower taxation on major goods they supply so they can continue to sell at a low price and make more profit and also the proliferation of the chinese. You think Ibo men are good in business wait till you meet the Chinese and the Arabs and you will see a different class of businessmen. |
