I support APC and campaigned tirelessly amongst friends and family for Mr Buhari's victory.

Nonetheless, I believe it would be a mistake for Nigeria to hand over an individual elected a Senator by the people of Nigeria to a foreign government. Obviously, this is about Mr Kashamu who faces allegation of involvement in drugs dealing in the USA.

My reasons are as follows:

1. It will do so much harm to Nigeria' image abroad

The arrest and and handover of Mr Kashamu - a serving senator - will be headline news around the world. The headline 'Nigerian Senator extradited to US on drugs charges' will top news on CNN, BBC, FOX, CCTV and similar media channels around the world. This will only serve to reinforce the most negative perception foreigners hold about Nigeria and its people

2. Only a banana republic hands over one of its 'Senator' to another country for prosecution.

If Mr Kashamu is sworn in as a Senator of the Federal Republic on May 29 (?), he becomes a serving senator. It will do Nigeria's reputation as a leading African power no good to be seen handling over one of its serving legislators to a foreign power for prosecution. Nigeria will be a laughing stock. The US will not extradite any of its citizen to Nigeria, let alone a US Senator

3. Yes, there may be low level bad publicity from not releasing Mr Kashamu, but trust me, releasing him will unleash a torrent of negatives about Nigeria because that news will catch fire like nothing else. Such bad publicity will really hurt Nigeria' reputation as a place where foreign investors want to do business.

4. Handing Mr Kashamu over to the US will be a slap on our democracy and a humiliation for his constituents. Whatever you think of Mr Kashamu, his constituents lined up under the sun and possibly rain for hours to cast their vote for him to emerge their representative. As far as the laws of Nigeria is concerned, this man is able to take his position and discharge his duties to his constituents as their Senator. Extraditing him to the US will amount to subjugating our laws to that of the US.

India, Brazil, South Africa, Russia, Malaysia etc will not do it. We should not.

Mr Buhari's govt should make it clear to the US that releasing a serving Senator to them is not conducive to our image as an independent democracy.

Please leave APC / PDP brouhaha aside for a moment and look at this from a national perspective. Even if you hate Mr Kashamu, put that aside for a moment. Once he becomes an ordinary citizen (maybe if he loses re-election in 2019), the US can return to pursue extradition.

The real question is ...is Mr kashamu involved in drug peddling? Is he wanted anywhere in the world? If the answers to these questions are positive......then Nigeria needs to do the needful!

If found guilty.. he must be treated like every common man caught with drugs.

He has no immunity. Now that he made the mistake of making himself a public figure, he has opened the debate on his culpability. if we are satisfied then no hiding place for him. He should not stay anyway near Jabi, Kado or Games village; they are close to the airport. It will be easier to fly him from Nnamdi Azikiwe to the US by Air Blackmaria.

Nonsense...

We have many men of integrity who are fit for the post of "senator"

The best image for Nigeria is to make sure he is extradited and replaced here by someone of integrity.

This is an era of change.

Say no to criminals in the senate. Nonsense

Will India do it?

Will Brazil do it?

Will Malaysia do it?

Absolutely not.

Nigeria is not a Banana republic.

Ibori's case is different as he was not a serving elected official when he was extradited from the UAE.

This man can be extradited once he ceases to be a 'Senator.' Though I see the flaw in that argument, it is paramount that we act as a confident grown - up country.

Nigeria is not Papua New Guinea (no disrespect to them)

Mr Gbawe, what's your thought?

I see you viewing.

Will Cameron extradite a serving MP to the US?

OBJ is vindicated now. There's no moral justification shielding a drug baron. Let law take its natural course.
