The University of Lagos convocation ended on Thursday with President Goodluck Jonathan and his education minister, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, shunning the three-day event.

The two also did not send representatives to the occasion.

Jonathan is the Visitor to the university.

The President during the Democracy Day broadcast on May 29, 2013, had changed the name of the university to the Moshood Abiola University, an action that attracted a barrage of criticisms.

The public outrage forced the Jonathan-led administration to reverse the name change some months later.

However, the university’s 2013/2014 convocation, which began on Tuesday with award of degrees on 3,104 students, came to a climax on Thursday with the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on three eminent Nigerians.

The honourees are former Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma; renowned technocrat, Deacon Gamaliel Onosode, and the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye.

The university also conferred emeriti professorship on three retired lecturers of the institution. The recipients are professors Olayide Abass, Francis Fajemirokun and Soga Sofola.

The UNILAG vice-chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Bello, commended Jonathan for helping to consolidate the nation’s democracy.

Bello said, “Your exemplary role in the elections and particularly at the end of the presidential election proved the bookmakers wrong and elevated the stature of Nigeria in the comity of nations as a democracy.”

Jonathan, the VC added, supported manpower development as well as university education, especially with the Needs Assessment Funding Agreement targeted at upgrading the infrastructural decay in the nation’s ivory towers.

Bello, therefore, urged the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to consolidate on the gains of higher education from the outgoing administration and entrench the implementation of the Needs Assessment Funding programme.

A very despicable attitude from "former Mr President to be" weather he likes it or not.....May 29th is his Last day as Mr President. If he still dey pain am well well Make him go die who cares

Well, the entire schools' stakeholders(Unilag's students, alumni, academic staffs, non academic staffs school authorities etc) should bear with Mr. President for not showing up at its convocation ceremony its because there's no time to waste time. Mr. President is wrapping up things in the Aso Rock.

he should have sent representives atleast,perhaps,he projected to get votes from tertiary institutions after the intervention funds. Many believe he failed in the education sector,for establishing 14 universities,without anyone for himself.

Was he missed? Better he stayed back. I heard they were some places he visited that people washed the street and swept his foot off,that was before the election,now that he is outgoing,that area will be washed for 7 days:a cruel treatment for a sitting president.

Consequently,what would have made the news instead of this would have been-GEJ meets with the Oba's for the return of 45billion naira after attending UNILAG's convocation ceremony,from a reliable source that was not given permission to speak with us.

I guess he's busy with the list of the people we want to sack before the end of his tenure.

Chaiii Nigeria really suffered under this dude, this just reminded me he actually changed the name of Unilag to MAULAG and that name never stood what a clueless and weak thinker we got as president.

Well he couldn't make the trip cuz he's busy witch hunting those who spent his 2trllion campaign funds and also trying to evacuate his loads from Aso rock to otuoke river side
