In my opinion, the way you present yourself matter a lot when you go for an interview. Be sure of your onions.
Be approachable. E.g. I recently interviewed a guy who I asked to introduce himself, he told me he was Mr. (his name). Believe me, that was the end of the road for him.
Though I asked him questions further but he already lost the chance for a consideration.

On the issue of handshake, it's not advisable to offer your hand first, let that come from your interviewer. What you need to do first is greet politely, if the interviewer then offers his hand, shake with confidence ( not arrogance).

Thanks.

bro pls tell us how best or professional should he have introduced himself, I beg I wan learn seem u be HR person? Pls be detailed

My first interview on January 12, 2012. I was hired because of how i answered this same question. (I already knew they were christians)

My name is Charles
Am the first son, in a family of 5.
three brothers and 1 sister.
I am a christian and my favourite verse in the bible is James 1 vs 5
If you lack wisdom, ask of God.

This did the magic for me, I answered a few other routine questions and was offered a handshake!
(dont know if this would go down well with a muslim though)

If I may add, no need of whipping out that chaplet in the waiting room to pray. ..unless you are interviewing for a position in a deliverance ministry.

You are not fooling anyone.

If you are nerve wreck, down a shot of Kaikai and lick some TomTom to mask the aroma. Your confidence will get at least 50% boost.

It wouldn't hurt to write down possible interview questions and practice with your siblings. They will judge you worse than your interviewers. Don't practice with friends. They may cheer you on down the path of perdition.

Good tips cool some interviews these days could be very unpredictable as things take a turn in an unexpected manner. Being calm and highly calculated helps in the long run.

NO.....so wat u telling me?
pls comprehend well. Was there anywhere I said you should go smelling. A cool deo would do. Your bro is on IT and not a permanent job. A cool deo is good to go but not a cologne or perfume.

Who told you that one is not allowed to wear either a cologne or perfume for an interview session? That is false. The only thing to be mindful of is the strength of the perfume/cologne fragrance. If strong, just a little spray on the body is okay.

Know your worth and lose the job abi? Somethings that apply elsewhere don't work here in Nigeria, no matter how right they are. The important thing is getting the job and if handshake will cause you not to do that, forget it.

Sir, it's only an advice. It's not the strength alone. The fragrance may be repulsive to your interviewers.

First impressions as they always say last longer and can play a major role in how an employer perceives you as a candidate. What you say during the first phase of the interview may make a big difference in the outcome – in a good way or in a bad way.

In fact, some hiring managers may make a decision to reject a candidate based on what they didn’t do when they met them. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to interview manners

How to Introduce Yourself at a Job Interview

When you arrive at the interview site introduce yourself to the receptionist by stating your name and the purpose of your visit. For example: “My name is Adeyeloja Femi and I have an interview scheduled with ------ at 2 pm.”

You will either be escorted to the interview room or the hiring manager will come out to meet you in the reception area. Again, take the time to introduce yourself so the interviewer knows who you are.

Offer to shake hands, even if the interviewer doesn’t offer their hand first. It’s good etiquette to include a handshake as part of your introduction. Tell the interviewer that it is a pleasure to meet them, smile, and be sure to make eye contact. For example: “I’m Adeyeloja Isiaka, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

During the Interview

Many hiring managers will start an interview with an open-ended question like “Tell me about yourself.” The core of your response should focus on the key elements in your background which will enable you to excel in the job for which you are interviewing. You should carefully analyze the job prior to the interview so you can point out the interests, skills, experiences, and personal qualities which will enable you to meet or exceed the requirements.

Keep it Short

Your introduction should be concise enough to hold the interest of the interviewer. Generally, a quick recap of your most compelling qualifications will suffice. You could also throw in a couple of titbits which are not essential to the job, but reflect your persona like the fact that you are an avid skier, have performed at comedy clubs, or collect African art. Your goal is to connect personally with the interviewer as well as to show that you’re qualified for the job.

Of course, your initial comments should show your enthusiasm for the job and organization. However, don’t overdo it and don’t spend too much time talking about yourself. The interviewer has an agenda and time is limited, so keep your introduction brief so you can move on to the next question.

Follow Up Questions

The interviewer may follow up your introduction with more questions, so it’s important to remember that you will need to support whatever assertions you make during your introduction. Be prepared to provide specific examples of how and where you have utilized your assets to successfully carry out work or volunteer roles, academic projects, or other productive endeavors.

Manners matter during a job interview.

Regardless of the job you are applying for, you will be expected to act professionally throughout every phase of the interview process from greeting the interviewer to saying thank you after your interview.

ALL THIS COPY AND PASTE ARTICLES WILL NOT HELP ANYBODY. THIS ARTICLE WAS NOT WRITTEN FOR AFRICA. HOW CAN U PUT THIS AS AN ADVICE TO ANY ONE. IN AFRICA, YOU DONT SHAKE ELDERS FIRST. YOUR INTERVIEWER IS TECHNICALLY YOUR 'ELDER'. YOU ABSOLUTELY DO NOT OFFER TO SHAKE HIS HAND FIRST.

To start with in Nigeria you don't shake your elders,no matter your age when you go for an interview its assumed the person interviewing you is your elder. Also you need to smell natural not wearing perfume or cologne as if you are going for a date. Besides you may not know how conducive the environment, you may be made to stay outside and sweat, imagine when you wear a cheap strong perfume couple with your body sweat. Those looking for force job most of these rules don't apply.

undecidedAll the sh1t listed above is nothing but crap. The last interview I attended was pretty straightforward and I killed it cool. After downing 3 bottles of orijin that early morning some minutes on my way to the interview just to help boost my confidence level, I stumbled and theatrically staggered to the front of the Secretary's desk and unconvincingly mumbled my reason for being there to her.

15 minutes later, it was my turn for the interview and I walked briskly to the interviewer's office.

Interviewer: Good morning
Me: good morning sir (grinning widely at him)

Interviewer: can we meet you

Naija interview is the hardest. U will hear where do want to be in the next 10yrs, what is their business. I attended an interview in a multinational company abroad by a British interviewer. He took me to KFC for interview and offered me drink n burger. I ate and he bought me take away. He said he loves Nigerian guys and gave me the job. He only asked" CAN YOU DO THE JOB AS A SAFETY OFFICER.

Handshake depends on the job you applied for. Offering hand to a team of Nigerian professors made up of mainly Yoruba men might be the beginning of your failure. grin grin If you are an Igbo man, that fries your arse completely cool

kinda don't go with the hand-shake part,It will be wise if the interviewer was first to initiate the process. Perfume or cologne used should not be too heavy,to cause distractions and undue attentions.

The problem with majority is understanding. It is not advicable to wear perfumes MR. A cool deo is ok. Not just the strength but the fragrance may be repulsive. Check on forbes. I never said one should beg for jobs. Shaking hands does mean you are confident. You may shake hands and fail in the shaking cause it may be too tight or too soft. It is best you avoid it unless you are offered one. You shaking hands does not cover up for flaws/ wrong answers.
