On UK Elections, What Lessons For Nigeria? by eduxerxes: 10:26am On May 08, 2015 |
Chinaedum Osuebi (a Nigerian resident in the UK shared this on his facebook page). I have just voted in the on going UK elections. Frankly, whereas I love Nigeria, I couldn't be more proud being British. At the pooling boot, it was so quite and serene - calm and peaceful. There were no security agencies of any sort. I did not find or see any politician bullying voters and sharing money to get last minute votes. There was no bank holiday declared. The election took place on a working day- Thursday. It took me less than two minutes to to do the needful. There were no card readers. I didn't have to visit the booth twice to vote in one election. During the campaigns,The Queen didn't threaten to drown anybody in River Thames including immigrants if they didn't vote her preferred candidate whoever that is. Disabled persons had special arrangements to suit their needs. At the campaign stages, Politicians including the PM entertained questions and concerns from the masses without his aides bullying anyone. People asked questions without fear of being exiled or killed. At the pooling boot, I didn't find any under aged voters. I actually went to the boot with my 12 year old Prince Ikenna, and he knew he is not due or expected to vote until another 6 years, if there will be elections when he turns 18, that is. At the heat of the campaigns I saw very few bills boards or none at all. Even when there were there, they were modest. I never saw the face of any politician in bill boards. Campaigns went on smoothly without any sort of molestation, assault or even loss of life. There were series of debates on radio and television. Politicians had their ideologies and manifestos to hand to sell to voters and woo their votes. I saw few branded busses. People went about their normal duties with no disruption of any sort. Cars were not shared to political jobbers. Indeed what I experienced was complete opposite to what I experienced in Nigeria less than two months ago. The list is endless. Nonetheless, I still love my country, but if I have a choice I will check out like Andy and never worry a damn about my beloved Nigeria. However one thing I find common with politicians is that they are all liars. But at least in advanced democracies, politicians are more decent and considerate with their lies. They are not greedy and it's not a do or die affair. In the next 24 hours from now, the results will be out. There will be a winner and losers, but no election tribunals. I am gutted for Nigeria and Nigerians because what we preach is democracy, but practice "dem all crazy".... Thanks to musical icon and legend Fela Anikulakpi Kuti of blessed memory. See you guys later. 2 Likes 1 Share |
