NaMe4: SIDS is a common cause of death in infants. Its cause is unknown, though there are many theories. It is certainly not the mum's fault or from the AC. My condolences. 3 Likes |

This is very possible. Cold kill babies fast. Once it hooks them in the rips, if you can't fight it, the baby is gone. |

AC did not kill the baby. Sudden infant death syndrome. 1 Like |

Nairalanders with these their stories that touch. Anyways, it might not av been the a.c, it could be a sudden infant death syndrome, where the baby just die without any afore noticed sign of sickness or ill-health. 2 Likes |

Yes it is possible for cold to kill a baby especially a new born. she was careless. You don't bath a newborn with cold water talkless of exposing the child to AC |

AC does not cause a cold, cold water does not cause cold, cold weather does not cause cold, the cold virus causes cold. All those visitors killed your baby With their Germs and such. This is if she was ill and since she wasn't do not blame the AC. If you aren't exposed to the cold virus, you won't get a cold. Keep your AC clean so it won't harbor germs and don't let people touch your baby's face anyhow. She probably died from sleeping on her stomach, choked in her sleep or something. Who knows. 3 Likes |

The death of the baby shouldnt be attributed to the AC but to the lost of body heat or the reduction of body temperature referred medically as HYPOTHERMIA.At that age,a good mom shouldnt expose the baby so much cold environment bcuz the babys is still fragile and cannot complain about the cold or withstand it.....in a nut shell,RIP 2 d baby 1 Like |

Nigerians can misuse Ac. Not saying the ac killed the baby, but almost all ac gas what we call climate control. It is meant to control the temperature u desire ur room to be in. Someone posted above me that 16 degrees is not too much, are u kidding me, 16degrees for a new born? I've been to many homes and they always keep their ac at the coolest, some don't even know the temperature can be controlled, same thing with car ac. When my child was born we always put on the ac, but the temperature is always left at 20 degrees during the day with fan set at low, and then between 24-26 degrees at night. That is enough to keep the baby's temperature at optimum. 1 Like |

My condolence to your friend. Yes AC kills new born babies. A long time ago my parent loss a 2 months old baby boy to air condition, then I was still a kid myself. Up till this very moment my mom hers never been able to forgive herself. Fast forward to the present now, because of that tragic experience, my wife and I set the temperature of the AC for our newest member of the family. If there is heat in the house reduce the temperature and cooling switch to 2, instead of 10 or 8. Standing fan is also a good alternative, at least until the baby mature. |

Sad but many people don't take care of their ACs. You need to take a good look at the air filter and you will notice years of accumulated dusts which when dampen enables bacteria to thrive. This might the have been inhaled by the baby while sleeping and not necessarily the cold. 2 Likes |

Condolence to the young mum. Does she have any adult leaving with her maybe Mother or MIL if she was married. The AC might have compounded the issue. Was the baby given the necessary immunizations(BCG) before allowing visitors, friends and Family touch her born. I rem when i put to bed i did not leave the hospital until i was given the first immunization for my baby to avoid stories that touch. I am sure this first time mum never read books or asked questions on what next step to take. Secondly, her mum or elder sister, aunt or close relative is to around her to always monitor the baby maybe she slept on the child mistakenly who knows. Few weeks after child birth can be very tiring especially when you are alone so the lady should go back to the drawing board and see where she got it wrong. Thirdly, It is advisable to always use a baby cot with net to avoid people touching your baby unnecessary even family anytime they come they should see the baby through the net and not carry carry these carry carry transfer germs and disease. Everyone will want to touch not knowing they are not helping the baby. I rest my case. sorry once again to your friend. 1 Like |

Google sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS. Did the mother use a pillow? That could a factor. |

neonates are to be kept warm at all times at home except if baby is sick with fever(ofcourse should have been taken to hospital if so).Temperature of at least 36.6°C and not more than 37.5°C.Hypothermia has a bad effect on neonatal systems.they even burn calories inorder to keep up their temperature.Ever been to a neonatal care unit of a good hospital before?its always warm and make adults to sweat. Well, the baby could have died secondary to an unknown health condition,AC will never be good for newborns cos of Hypothermia.Sorry for the loss.May God console you and make you smile again. |

Ac doesn't kill babies, never heard of it. I have three and all three were spoilt rotten by AC. The last one sef is restless when there is no electricity. Even if it were the AC, there should have been some form of sickness. Did she sleep with the baby on same bed, hope she didn't smother the baby by mistake being a first time mother. There are cases of babies dying in their sleep in bed, they call it cradle death or something like that, not sure now. There is no known cause yet, it could be becaus of positioning, maybe the baby wasn't getting enough air cos of its sleeping position. Finally, lemme tell you the African way, I hope someone did not do something to the kid. You know as visitors and seeming well wishers come to greet the mother and child, not everyone has good intentions. I never left my babies alone or unattended with any person without my mom watching and and made sure the kid is always fully clothed before they pinch here, rub something or insert something somewhere....I have heard stories.... Plus na prayer also o, I always commit them to God from infant even till now. I guard them jealously, because the heart of men is very wicked oooo! |

I am a medical doctor and can categorically tell you that AC can even prevent a child from dying suddenly (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). This is ASSUMING THE CHILD WAS COVERED WELL WHILE SLEEPING. See below: Air Conditioning Messes with Your Sleep True. This one is true, but not in a bad way; air-conditioning has actually been shown to improve people’s sleeping habits. It has also been shown to prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) among babies. The cooler you are at night, the deeper you will sleep, and we all know that the better you sleep, the healthier you are. http://www.horizonservicesinc.com/blog-posts/air-conditioning-services-2/does-your-air-conditioner-make-you-sick |
