Chuka Umunna To Contest For British Foreign Secretary by Brownville007: 8:43pm On May 17, 2015
Chuka Umunna hopes to return to the Labour frontline with
a plum job under the new leader, friends have revealed.
The 36-year-old quit the race to replace Ed Miliband as
party leader, just three days after he three his hat into the
ring.
But now he is eyeing a big job in the Labour cabinet,
including Foreign Secretary, as part of the campaign to keep
Britain in the European Union.
Mr Umunna, the MP for Streatham in south London, pulled
out of the race on Friday saying he could not cope with the
‘pressure that comes with being a leadership candidate’.
He had announced his bid in a Facebook video on Tuesday
morning but withdrew three days later blaming the level of
scrutiny he and his family were facing – including his new
girlfriend Alice Sullivan.
However, he has now signalled that he wants to remain on
the political frontline and has not ruled out standing for the
leadership in the future.
I hope to play a leading role in Labour’s campaign to keep
the UK in the EU during the forthcoming referendum which
is absolutely crucial
Chuka Umunna
He would like to retain his current role as shadow Business
Secretary or secure promotion to the shadow Foreign
Secretary role – which is likely to be key during the EU
referendum campaign.
David Cameron has promised to renegotiate Britain’s
membership of the EU before holding a referendum by the
end of 2017.
Labour leadership frontrunner Andy Burnham today pledged
to drop opposition to staging a referendum on Britain
leaving the European Union.
He called on David Cameron to bring the vote forward to
next year, warning it cannot be delayed until 2017.
And he warned the Prime Minister ‘it really won’t be good
enough’ if his plan to renegotiate Britain’s membership of
the EU does not include changes to migrants claiming
benefits.

Mr Umunna is now considering which candidate to publicly
endorse for the leadership, which could be crucial in
securing a high profile role in the new shadow cabinet.
Friends say he is ‘not in the business of doing deals’ and
will focus on who ‘he thinks is the right person’ to lead the
party.
But he has made clear that he wants to front Labour’s
campaign to keep Britain inside the EU.
‘It’s something that he cares deeply about – Britain’s future
in the European Union. That’s bound to be an important
feature of this Parliament,’ a source close to Mr Umunna
said today.
‘Obviously it is up to the next leader who they appoint. He
has not endorsed any of the candidates yet. He wants to
reflect on it a bit more. He would support the person he
thinks is the right person.
‘We are not in the business of doing deals.’
Friends have also said he has not ruled out the possibility of
standing for the leadership in the future: ‘Never say never,
although this is not part of some long-term calculation. He
is 36, he wants to have kids and a family and all of that.’
In his statement confirming his decision to stand aside in
the Labour leadership race, Mr Umunna made clear he
wants to have a role in the EU campaign.
He said: ‘I intend to carry on playing my full role as a proud
member of our Shadow Cabinet taking on the Tories.
‘I also hope to play a leading role in Labour’s campaign to
keep the UK in the EU during the forthcoming referendum
which is absolutely crucial.’

1. Mr Umana's party, the labour party, lost woefully in the election.
2. Their party leader resigned due to the loss.
3. Mr Umana inidicated he would context with others to become the new party leader, but withdrew from contesting
4. Whoever emerges as the new opposition leader in a few week's time will select who comes to the opposition front bench
5. Umana hopes to be one of those the new opposition leader will select

How does this suddenly translate to him targeting British Foreign Minister position.

Its like suggesting that someone from APGA or Labour party will become APC's choice as Nigeria's Foreign Minister. Mr Umana is as far from being the UK's next Foreign Minister as you and I are from being Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Chuka Umunna's expression of interest should not have been confused with a declaration to contest a non-existent election.

The article posted above is blatantly misleading, because the labour party no longer holds elections for members of its shadow cabinet.
