Sen. George Akume has copped out of the race for the Senate presidency after a two-day retreat the APC senators-elect held in Abuja on the weekend. Sen- BukolaSaraki and Sen. Ahmed Lawan are now left to contest the highest seat in the APC dominated Upper Chamber. The race is now between the north-central and the north-east.Akume now rests on the hope of being handpicked to play the second fiddle as deputy Senate president if Lawan clinches it.Saraki’s deputy, yet unknown, would come from the north-east. Saraki, a former governor of Kwara, is said to be having the support of over 30 senators, including some from the PDP led by Senators Andy Uba and GodswillAkpabio. That gave Saraki a head start compared to Lawan, a chairman of the Senate committee on public accounts. Lawan is from Yobe.
