President Goodluck Jonathan may have declined the parting gift Tony Anenih offered him when the former PDP BoT chair resigned last week, following a party-wide outcry for the resignation of the party leadership. The BoT appointed Haliru Mohammed yesterday to fill in for now.
Anenih said he was stepping out for Jonathan to take over as the BoT chair. Actually, the PDP constitution allows former presidents in the party the right to head its trustees. But Mohammed’s appointment, four days to Jonathan’s exit, might indicate the president has no interest in couching in the seat.

Jonathan, however, has been chipping in pieces of advice on how the party will tide the storm after losing the centre to the APC in March. News reports say he told the party leadership to find a way of keeping a northerner in either of the party chairs. As Secondus stepped in after AdamuMu’azu resigned as the NWC chairman last week, Jonathan suggested a northerner should come in as the BoT chair. This is to head-off the possibility of the PDP sinking into oblivion in the region, where the APC, now, is waxing stronger.
Mohammed is one of the most recycled oldies in the PDP. After a career in the Nigeriacustoms service, Mohammed was made commissioner of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission in 1999 in the Olusegun Obasanjo government. He was later drafted into the ministry of communication in 2001. Between then and 2010, Mohammed occupied the post of PDP’s national vice chairman and deputy national chairman, and acting national chairman. When Jonathan became president in 2011, he appointed Mohammed as defence minister, and, later in 2014, as the arrow head of his re-election bid.
