Another story was the Thunder Balogun story:

Thunder Balogun had incision on his left leg so they warned him not to take shots with his left leg.

There was a bet between Thunder Balogun and a great keeper. That in 5 penalties thunder would not score any.

He took 4 and the keeper caught all the "Penariti" when he wanted to take the last one

A woman just screamed "Thunder Balogun remember your left leg" Thunder Balogun fired with his left leg.

The shot was so hard that the keeper tried to stop it but it went through the keepers tummy and came out

from the back killing the keeper instantly. I WAS THERE ON THIS OCCASION TOO.

The funny thing is this story still lingers till today. My younger brother was told the story too in school like 10 years ago and he told his friends he did not believe because I never told him about it. They all shouted on him and he came home to ask me.

I also heard Indians dont wear shoes that was why they were not allowed to play football because FIFA would not allow them to play barefooted.

the funny part of it is that i used to tell my mum this story as if i was there.

The only reason any football result will end up 99-1 in just 90 mins, if 2 players are playing against 11 players, who knows it might be handball.

He confirmed Nigeria never played any match with India, and he never played against India in his career.
So to all nairalander, its fun hearing this kind of story. I think it is comic relief. Afterall unborn kids will still hear the story and tell their grandchildren

I sent a mail to him about 7 years ago to confirm, because I learnt he scored the only Nigeria goal in that match. He confirmed its all rumour because Nigeria never played india in any match. Infact india dont play soccer because fifa dont allow them to play without boot. It is a comic rilif

Dayo, my version of Thunder Balogun story tells me that Balogun's brother was the goalkeeper. Balogun fired a hard shot that hit his brother in the belly, killing him. From then on, Thunder Balogun was banned from using his left foot by FIFA.

May I point out to most of you the story could be true!! I see gasps from everyone there. During the British rule in Nigeria, the Indian nation had already got their independence and some Indians would have been working in Nigeria. The Indians collected 11 players and Nigeria had 11 players. They played a game of cricket!!!! At close of play India were 99-1. That is 99 for the loss of 1 wicket. I could see how the ignorant press at the time would have put in the papers 99-1 to India. Most stories have easy explanations. End of thread.

I grew up in Kaduna,and i also heard of the phantom match where India flogged Nigeria 99 and said if Nigeria can score 1 goal they hav won.
During the play,the Nigerian players see the ball as diff wild animals.Lukily Nigeria got a penalty,then the player that played the penalty untied one of his shoes and when the keeper went for the shoe thinking it was the ball,he scored.Then it was 99-1.Then i heard it was because of that match that India was banned from football.And i forogt to tell u that the Indian keeper was blind.

This story is a popular story among pri sch kids.When it is told by the children pay rapt attention and ask questions.

Keep the myth alive, don't locate the Indian player

It is obvious that the story is fabricated. But how this fabrication became 'national' and 'generational' is what is amazing. From Kaduna to Enugu to Kwara to Lagos to even the remotest part of the country, there has not been anybody here that has so far said he didn't hera about it.

Whoever formulated that story deserves a place in Guinness World Records

Surprisingly, I was also told this as a young boy by my uncle. But the two countries included were Ethiopia and India. They say that that is why thy were suspended from FIFA for some time. I dont believe it, its just im surprised this was also told to someone else.
