It took me 8yrs to get here. Recruited by then Intercontinental Bank straight from NYSC Camp Ede, Osun State, my story has been one of good progression over the years. Today am a Middle Mgt staff taking home almost half a million naira in monthly benefits, yet it is time to type that letter and sign myself into entrepreneurial freedom!!!

The above is not written to brag, but to maybe motivate others who may be in my shoes... having great entrepreneurial skills yet fearful of what lies on the other side. I have tasted both worlds and I choose to fly. Let me mention however that quitting this job did not happen overnight, but is rather the result of a journey embarked upon over the last one year: a journey to Build a plan B. Today, that Plan B is the only Plan, raking in better revenues than the initial Plan A, yet am barely scratching the surface.

The feeling is indescribable as I wait for Monday... for on that day I will be giving my current employer the mandatory 30 days notice. In the coming days, I look forward empowering others to do exactly what I am doing now so that together we can contribute to rebuilding Nigeria

Overused and abused lie.

Google recently poached Ruth Porat from Goldman Sachs and she will earn $70m (N14b) in 2 years. (http://ww2.cfo.com/people/2015/03/google-greets-new-cfo-ruth-porat-with-70m-pay-package/)

She is not an employee, not part of owners of Google.

Tell me if N14bn in 2 years is not wealth. Immediate sign-on bonus for her is $1m (N0.2b)

Coming to Nigeria, the CEO of Shell is an employee of Shell (not part of owners), and tell me the CEO of Shell is not wealthy.

I agree we should encourage entrepreneurship, but you guys go to the extreme in making your point.
Exactly the point I was trying to make. In the UK here, some bankers (non executives) get bonuses of over £1m. In 2013, over 300 Barclays staff earned more than that in Bonuses alone. Entrepreneurship is not for everybody but I strongly encourage it if entered into with the right mindset.

I do not agree with the "you-cannot-be-rich-if-you-an-employee" mantra too but it takes a long time and doesn't give one freedom of time. Although being wealthy via entrepreneurship takes time too but that time freedom gives it an advantage.

You sighted an example of ceo of shell. The person is rich (I envy am self) but not richer than his employee (Shell) as against your argument.

You still don't get me on this employee-richer-than-employer thing. Go and check the original post and see the part I responded to (the bolded part).

On the time thing. It is another myth. Entrepreneurs spend more time on work than salaried jobs! They are not free.

If you go through his threads, you will see that he is a mini importer with a shop where he sells off his goods readily..

Thanks, noticed that after reading through the thread.

Good sense, excellent thinking.

Thanks... however on the contrary, bad bosses contributed immensely to starting my Plan B. They pushed me to the wall until it dawned on me that this was not my place and that took me back to the drawing board.

It's not within your power to determine how people will treat you. What's within your power is how you react.

@bold...that is exactly the same situation that I am in right now and it is really pushing me to go independent.

I work in a corporate environment right now but I deeply feel out of place. I barely have up to half passion for the environment and job.

There is always that phobia for failing while starting up as a novice. It takes extreme courage and luck to succeed as an entrepreneur in Nigeria as source of capital could be a huge concern. The only encouraging benefit is the huge market to sell your products should u succeed. I wish everyone taking this step all the best.

I keep seeing this often. While the latter position is largely true, the former is not always the case. It depends on where you work and how well you are paid. Also remember that not all are gifted or trained to be entrepreneurs. There are salary earners that make more money monthly than some entrepreneurs make a year.
For example, in the financial sector in the UK, there are workers who earn over N300m equivalent in bonuses alone even though their salaries may be less than half that.Such a person may find it more rewarding working for someone than for himself. My point is people are different and have different purposes in life.

You can't be any more right. Lewis Hamilton earns faaaaaar more than his employer. Way more.
But still, the satisfaction creating service brings to some may just bring more fulfillment than money.
