Those middlemen in the current supply chain must go. Subsidy removal must be approached through what we call “the blind man and his yam”. If you have to pill the blind man’s yam, you must keep whistling while you do so as a sign that you are not introducing the yam into your own mouth.

This is the bedrock.

Truly, petrol can sell for N40 a litre but things must get worse before they get better. Subsidy is strangulating us! We must take the tough decision NOW – tighten our belts and let subsidy go!

Sooner or later Jonathan will be vindicated.

The only coma in the OP is asking government to be involved with refineries.

That is wrong.
Very wrong.

Government has no business doing business.
The role of government is to enact POLICIES and create the enabling environment for PRIVATE businesses to flourish that are then regulated, monitored and TAXED!

Why will any sensible person want to pay for something instead of receiving REVENUE while achieving better satisfaction in the long run

Was this not the same thing that GEJ offered when some devil's incarnate in form of APC vehemently kicked against it in the name of politics?
They must bring another solution entirely and not what they rejected earlier.

Remember that if subsidy is removed prices of everything will go high. And in my country Nigeria, when price goes up it doesn't come down again. Who suffers...the poor

Johnnyessence:

If all American farmers were to be allowed to produce at their optimum levels, food would be surplus and totally useless everywhere. The American government has had the practice over the years of paying some selected farmers to stay at home, not producing anything during the year. That’s subsidy.

Am hearing this for the first time.
Can we ever get to this level?

So GEJ was right! Most actions against him was as a result of tribalism. Nothing more, nothingless than trbalism.

I just want to point out that if the pump price is very low compared to the neighbouring West African countries. Export SMUGGLING of petrol products will become more profitable. Another problem will arise.

Sometimes, I wonder why we Nigerians lie to ourselves and engage in the fruitless effort of convincing ourselves that LIE is same as TRUTH. I am not an expert in Economics or Administration, but I know the following for sure.

1. Presently there is no subsidy. Buying petrol at N130 per litre while government officials are reporting billions as subsidy spent makes no sense to the man on the street.

2. We can survive without subsidy Nigerians are survivalist a little time of sacrifice won't kill us. If we can buy petrol at N400 per litre during scarcity, then whatever additional cost the removal of subsidy will introduce per litre won't kill us.

3. We survived the demise of NITEL, we will survive this ordeal! Before the advent of GSM, I remember how I ran after NITEL officials (junior staff who carries ladder from pole to pole) begging them to come and fix the landline telephone in our office. Those guys were like demigods. After begging their big bosses in the office, you still need to run after the technicians and pacify them else, your phone won't work. That was beside the outrageous bills which you dare not query! When MTN and ECONET came, their charges were outrageous, but today the hawker on the street can make calls to another hawker on the next street without breaking a bank.

In my humble opinion, there has never being "true SUBSIDY". Our collective resources is being shared among "thieves" who wishes that the mismanagement in the center will continue forever.
