For over a century now, the once uniquely serene and peaceful atmosphere of Plateau state, Nigeria has continued to witness seemingly unabated spates of violence and attacks resulting into wanton destruction of lives and properties. Of late, the demonic attacks around the localities of Barkin Ladi and Riyom has assumed a genocidal dimension with hurendous systematic killing of the Berom people and destruction of their means of livelyhood.

The calamity brought about by group of terrorist otherwise known as 'Fulani Marauders' on these people can only be imagine! The bouts of violence carried by these demons resulted in senseless mass killing of innocent women and children in villages of Barkin Ladi and Riyom LGAs of Plateau state. These helpless people are murdered and killed right in their homes at night or early in the morning. Still not satisfied with the blood letting, the marauders lay more ambush on innocent farmers tending their crops, killing them off right on their farms. A strategy the demons believe will stave the locals of food stuv for survival, thereby increasing their misery incredibly.

One may ask why these attacks Why are innocent people being killed on a daily bases in Barkin Ladi-Riyom by the Fulani Marauders and the government seems helpless to arrest the siuation What do these terrorist want with Plateau state Well, that is a matter for discussion for another time. But what I want the public to know is that the quest for Plateau state never started today. The battle has been on since the time of Usman Danfodio! It is on record that the dream of Uman, the Jihadist that led Jihad across Northern Niger-area at that time was to spread Islam across the entire regions from North to South.
Usman dan Fodio lived in the late eighteenth century in one of the Hausa states of Gobir. According to legend He was a scholar and a holy man. A devout muslim who was committed to the spread of Islam throughout West Africa.
As time went on he gathered a large number of followers round him. By 1804 many Fulani had accepted dan Fodio's strict Muslim way of life. The group became so strong that the ruler of Gobir according to Derek Wilson (1971) who was not a Muslim, grew frightened and soon there was fighting between his soldiers and dan Fodio's followers. In 1804 Uthman dan Fodio declared a JIHAD ( A Muslim holy war) against his enemies. In the wars which followed the Fulani were completely successful. They conquered, not only Gobir, but most of the other Hausa states and the Northern Yoruba lands.
Other devout Muslims followed dan Fodio's lead and declared Jihads in other parts of West Africa. By 1880 much of ther western Sudan was under the control of Jihadist States as noted by Derek Wilson (1971).

Because their conquest across states in present day Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Bornu and others was highly successful, they were determined to go further inland to conquer it and bring them under the rule of the Islamic Caliphate. These brought them into conflict with the indigenes of what is now Plateau state.

Although Plateau state had come under immensed attack from marauders in recent times, it is not the only state faced with this challenge. Other states in similar situation include Southern Kaduna, parts of Bauchi state, Taraba state, parts of Adamawa and Benue state.

Historically speaking, the indigenes of Plateau had over the years successfuly defend themselves against invaders. At no time where they ever conquered to the point of occupation and domination. Indeed during the Jihadic years of the early 19th century the ethnic groups that made up Plateau state were never subjugated under Fulani Emirate rule. The advances of the Jihadic forces were continuously repulsed by the locals. These continued until one time the Jihadist decided to change tactics to mount a surprise attack. They skirt round the Plateau to move into other parts of the country. Lots of people don't know this. The idea behind the plan was to encycle the locals and box them in from all sites. As espected the mauraders attacked towards the late 19th century. This particular battle was known as the Naraguta war of 1873. The plan then was to decimate the local ethnic populations and bring the lots of the area under Caliphate control. That however never came to reality as the local forces namely the Beroms, Afizere, Buji, Anaguta and Amo rallied together in a combine force and defeated the invading Jihadist forces.

The European Connection.
As stated earlier, the ethnic groups of Plateau were never at one point conquered by external forces for centuries. Natural suroundings of mountains, hills, rocks and caves blended with great combative skills, the locals were able to withstand and sumount the much more sophisticated Hausa-Fulani war machine. Things however took a different turn when the Europeans arrived Plateau in 1903. As expected the Europeans met stiff resistance at first, but like any other British contact with indegenious people of Africa and elsewhere, the Europeans prevailed against the locals, no thanks to their superior firepower.

The conquest of the indigenous people of Plateau state by the British is what set the stage for Hausa-Fulani expansionism and hostilities against the people of the Middle Belt.

Good Review. Please continue. The Caliphate will not stop till they islamise ne and ec and wipe out Christianity from these places. They fear Danjuma a bit but have no respect for Gowon, J. Hussaini etc. I don't know what would have happened to Plataeu if Domcat Bali were alive? They recognise IBB and AA in Niger state. The first bokoharam factory in Minna was fished out by Marilyn Ogar, the woman DG DSS. This may not be unconnected with her current relegation. They dance round Benue without attack yet 'cos of David Mark. They persecute Igbos 'cos they are consistent Christians wherever they are. They have plans Yoruba Christians. The Hausa/Fulani Arabs have plans for every nook and cranny of Nigeria. But there is God who they do not know very well.

British Colonialism And Indirect Rule In Nigeria
Following the conquest and imposition of colonial power at the beginning of the 20th century, the policy adopted by the British colonist in governing the Niger-Area, Nigeria was a system of 'Indirect Rule': A kind of government whereby policies and administration was carried out through local chiefs and advisers of the natives. Why did the colonialist choose this system of governance? The answer lies in a statement made by Lord Lugard, then governor general of Nigeria in 1920 where he described Nigeria as:
A collection of self-contained and mutually independent Natives States, seperated from one another by great distances, by differances of history and traditions and by racial, political, social and religious barriers.

Derek Wilson (1971) noted that Lugard believed it was impossible to bring the whole country under one form of government owing to cultural differences and complexities, each tribe independent of each other. Therefore, the only system of administration the British colonialist believed would ensure smooth administration of these people under one government was Indirect Rule.
Although the system met stiff challenges in other parts of Nigeria, it proved highly sucessful in Northern Nigeria where the Muslim emirs had already established their rules over large areas before the Europeans came.
You can imagine what happened next.
Earlier I described how the Fulani emirate tried several times without sucess to conquer the hill trbes of Plateau state. How they employed numerous tricks to bring the natives indirectly under Fulani emirate rule and failed. The situation seem hopeless. The Hausa-Fulani emirs's plan was to venture down south in fullfilment of Usman dan Fodio's wishes of spreading Islamic influence across the entire length and breadth of Nigeria but were met with brute force by ragtag pagan natives. It was embarassing to them that some worthless semi naked tribes of hills and mountains could withstand their much more sofisticated and organised Jihadist forces. But like an answer to a prayer, the opportunity came when the British adopted the system of indirect rule. It was like a golden opportunity presented to the Hausa-Fulani on a platter of gold. The emirs now have a great opportunity to extend its influence over not only Plateau but Nigeria as a whole. The expansionist agenda of the Hausa-Fulani had began.

Dawn Of The Hausa-Fulani Emirate, An Age Of Lies And Decied.
Events following the establishment of colonial rule in Nigeria can best be described as an age of Lies and Decied of huge proportion as the Fulani leadership attempt to cement their influence across Nigeria. As noted earlier, the new generation of Fulani leaders in the periods after 1800s, 1940s to 1950s and post independent era had socio-religious and political linkages with previously established leadership under Usman dan Fodio. In that instance, the leadership made claims which suggest that: Political rulership in all Nigerian territories was theirs by might of conquest and right as god-given (Born To Rule). This notion was further confirmed by Sultan Bello of the emirate in 1824 where he alleged that: god had given him all the lands of the infidels right down to the coast of southern Nigeria. According to Chunun Logams (1987) the Sardauna further claimed that he was informed of a prophecy that the Fulani empire would last for one hundred years and that its end would come on the Grazing Ground. Has the prophecy been fullfiled? Did the Hausa Fulani emirate ever conquered the middle belt and Southern Nigeria? Later developments would shed more light on the matter.

After the imposition of indirect rule in Nigeria, the polities of the central highlands (Middle Belt) were administered as part of Bauchi province. This was based on the misleading information provided at the Emir's palace in Bauchi on Pseudo-Claims of the Fulani emirate that the central highlands (Middle Belt) belonged to them. As noted by PIDAN publication (2010), the whole area of the middle belt which the Hausa people even named ''Dar alJabal'' (an Arabic term which means ''Land of Mountains'') was erroneously referred to as ''Bauchi Plateau'' and admistered as such from 1902 to 1926. To make matters worse, the situation became precarious when huge deposits of tin was descovered by the colonist. According to PIDAN (2010) the inordinate economic ambitions of the Royal Niger Company pushed the company into exploring the area of the Plateau, which was said to be rich in tin deposits. Col. H Laws, a British mining engineer was then sent by the company to the area with enough supplies and funds to hire about 600 workers from different parts of the country. Of all the workforce task with mining the area, eighty percent of them were Hausa-Fulani.
